Error on boot, Redhat ES 2.1 after power failure - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

Hello, I'm running Redhat ES 2.1 on an Intel 733MHz machine. We had a power failure here this morning and I couldn't get this machine shut down before the UPS ran out of battery life. Now, when I boot I'm getting: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY On /home. The machine won't boot and running fsck manually allegedly repairs the disk until I reboot and am forced to repeat the entire process ad infinitum. This machine worked fine until the power failure, but now its not. I know its possible that the power failure trashed the hard drive, but is it ...

Default Error on boot, Redhat ES 2.1 after power failure

    Hello,

I'm running Redhat ES 2.1 on an Intel 733MHz machine. We had a power
failure here this morning and I couldn't get this machine shut down before
the UPS ran out of battery life. Now, when I boot I'm getting:

    UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY

On /home. The machine won't boot and running fsck manually allegedly
repairs the disk until I reboot and am forced to repeat the entire process
    ad infinitum.

This machine worked fine until the power failure, but now its not. I know
its possible that the power failure trashed the hard drive, but is it
possible that there may be a way to correct the error (that I'm unaware of)
    and move on?

Thanks for any and all assistance.

Use the first installation disc to boot the system into rescue

    David,

Thanks, I've tried that too. I was hoping for something that I've
overlooked, or a corrupt fstab file - or a needle in a haystack. ;-)

    Thanks,
    John

Ok, have you tried going to runlevel 3 after you run fsck on it
    instead of rebooting?

    # telinit 3

If that works then try doing a proper shutdown using
"shutdown -r now" and see if that works.
