Error using Acrobat PDFMaker in Word
For the past three years Acrobat 5.0 on my old Windows 95 PC at work has reliably converted MS Word documents to PDF for me but recently I was issued with a new Windows 2000 machine and had Acrobat re-installed by our I.T. team (I do not have admin or power user rights to install). Now I always get the following error when trying to convert a Word file to PDF .....
Acrobat PDFMaker 5.0 for Word:
The following error occurred while printing: Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup. Try one or more of the following.
- Check printer by printing a test page from Windows
- Make sure printer is turned on and online
- Re-install printer driver
I have checked in Start/Settings/Printers and Acrobat Distiller appears there OK so, presumably, there may be something wrong with settings in Distiller? I can't recall having this hassle when Acrobat was first installed on my old PC.
Hopefully a re-install of Adobe is not required as our IT people can take weeks to respond to a call!

Re: Error using Acrobat PDFMaker in Word
Hi - didn't expect a reply so soon! It is Word 97 and Acrobat 5.0.5. running on Windows 2000. The old PC was Windows 95 with Word and Acrobat the same versions as above.

Re: Error using Acrobat PDFMaker in Word
Go to Adobe's knowledgebase <http://www.adobe.com/support/products/acrobat.html> for Acrobat. Type "print due to a problem" (including the quotes). I believe the resulting doc will be helpful to you.

Re: Error using Acrobat PDFMaker in Word
Kay
Thanks for the advice, unfortunately Solution 1 of the document hasn't solved the problem. To carry out Solution 2 (i.e. uninstall/re-install Acrobat)I need to get one of our IT people involved as I don't have Admin rights in Win 2000. I was hoping for a fix I could carry out myself as our IT department are mega-slow in dealing with user problems!

Re: Error using Acrobat PDFMaker in Word
Perhaps I got you to the wrong document, as the one I thought you'd get doesn't suggest reinstalling. I'll paste in the contents of

Issue
When you try to print to Adobe Acrobat Distiller Printer 5.x, or when you try to create an Adobe PDF file with Adobe PDFMaker 5.x in Windows NT, 2000, or XP, Distiller or PDFMaker displays one of the following errors:
-- "Error writing to C:\WINNT\Profiles\All Users\Desktop\*.pdf for Document [filename]. The system cannot find the file specified. "
-- "This document failed to print."
-- "There was an error found when printing the document [filename] to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\*.pdf."
-- "The following error occurs while Printing: Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup."
Solutions
Do either of the following:
Solution 1
Re-create the AcroTray.exe shortcut in the Startup folder:
1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 5.0/Distillr folder.
2. Right-click the AcroTray.exe file, and choose Create Shortcut from the pop-up menu.
3. Copy the Shortcut to AcroTray.exe file to the Startup folder:
-- In Windows XP and 2000, the Startup folder is in Documents and Settings/All Users/Start Menu/Programs.
-- In Windows NT, the Startup folder is in WINNT/Profiles/All Users/Start Menu/Programs.
Note: If the Startup folder already contains an AcroTray.exe shortcut, click Yes to replace it with the one you created.
4. Restart the computer.
Solution 2
Restart the AcroTray.exe process:
Make sure that the AcroTray.exe file is in the Program Files/Adobe/Acrobat 5.0/Distillr folder.
1. Use the Add/Remove Programs utility to remove Acrobat.
2. Make sure that no applications are running, including virus protection software, and reinstall Acrobat 5.x.
