Default ethernet stopped working with upgrade to 10.2.8

I did the system upgrade last night and when I rebooted couldn't get
back on the DSL connection so I'm on the dial-up right now. Then did a
shut-down and restart. Same result. Looks like the computer is not
talking to the dsl modem although I have 4 green lights on teh modem.

Anyone else have this problem?

Same settings. That was the first thing I checked.

I have also had this problem. I am reinstalling Jaguar from scratch to
see if the problem goes away. So far, ethernet is restored with Jaguar
reinstalled, without the update. No changes in system settings.
including DHCP.

There is a discussion of this at www.macfixit.com
From what I've seen posted there:
- problems with the 10baseT ethernet
- 100baseT seems to work fine
- a temporary workaround is to replace: AppleGMACEthernet.kext with the one
from an OSX 10.2.6 installation (this is in System/Library/Extensions )

Thanx Matt. I'll try that and monitor macfixit for any other bugs in

Barbarossa:

Before upgrading, save this:

AppleGMACEthernet.kext (ver. 1.2.4)

from: System>Library>Extentions

[If you have already upgraded, you will have to find a copy of
this kext somewhere else.

IF: you can boot into OS-9

Then: put it on the Desktop of 9

Then: Reboot into 9, and replace (ver. 1.3.0)
with the saved (ver. 1.2.4).

Then: Reboot into OS-X.

IF: you cannot boot into OS-9, you will have to do this via the
command line, or sudo, or some such.
