Excel ?.? for PB 145B? - Mac Applications & Software

Re: PowerBook 145B; MacOS 7.1 Good Day to all. Could someone tell me which versions of MicroRats Excel would be compatible with a Mac PowerBook 145B (yes, that's 145B, as in just after the wheel was invented.)? It has MacOS 7.1 and I'm not thinking of upgrading that for a while. All we need is a basic spreadsheet to go on the Book. My secretary is a PeeCee nut, so getting her to use Claris/AppleWorks is not really an option. Thanks and good weekend to all. --SD-- -- Reply: take out the trash...

    Hi,

I believe Excel 5, part of Office 4.2.1, should run on a 145B under Sys
7.1. I am running it on a 520c under 7.5.3 with no problems. It'll run on
a 68030 also & does not need a math coprocessor, although it will use one
if present. Functionally, Excel 5 des just about everything the later
versions do, it is the 1st version with Visual Basic for Applications
(very nifty). If you need to export tables to html a $7 shareware Add-in
does it as well or better than the built-in html support of later
    versions.

Excel 4, which was contemporary with Word 5.1 (which does run on a PB145
with enough memory), should work. Looking at the manual, it says it
requires Mac Sytem 6.0.2 or later; at least 2MB memory if using System
    7.0 or later.

It comes on 7 x 800K floppies, and was done in the days when you got
    copious, exesnive looking manuals too.

Thanks, Mike; so that's XL 5 and 4 that seem to be OK. That gives me
some leeway. SEVEN 800K floppies!?! Gads, what a clunker world it was 10

If your machine is maxed out :-) at 8 MB ram, then go with 5 - otherwise
