Exchange Nightmare - Adobe Illustrator Windows

I am a seldom user of AI-CS1. And not very familiar with Exchange; where creators share their collections. Was trying to download 2 swatches (patterns & textures files) from the Exchange...A thistle pattern, which was supporsed to be .eps format and another that was supposed to be the AI format. I am a seldom user of AI-CS1. And not very familiar with Exchange; where creators share their collections.

Was trying to download 2 swatches (patterns & textures files) from the Exchange...A thistle pattern, which was supporsed to be .eps format and another that was supposed to be the AI format.

It was my understanding that I would first go to the presets folder and deposit AI format files among similar. Start up Illustrator, load 'Other Libraries' and the files would appear in swatches palette.

Instead they come into the folder on the desktop as .ps and .pdf.

I can't figure what I'm doing incorrectly and I don't know what to do with the portables or postscripts...convert them to ai?

Sorry to be so stupid about all this. I tried and failed to find a similar experience with the search engine.

    Hi

Check in the page where each one gives a description (in Excfhange) - it will tell you what version of AI each one is compatible with. I have had this problem when trying to open CS downloads with AI10. Also if you just try and open them it can try and convert them to PDF (on my system anyway) rather than in AI.

Try opening a new doc and them just opening the brush/swatch from there.

Hope this is of some help.

    Hi Latchet,

I knew I would not be the only person to get pdf'd....
The swatches are in ai formats on site and are often for any version.

It must have to do with the Adobe site as I have tried 2 diferent browsers now. The downloads are to Illustrator CS, but are downloaded to the desktop in a download folder.

Nothing works properly for me. Tried others in .ai format after posting here about the initial 2 downloads. Just deleted all for now.

Guess I will figure it out eventually. Appreciate your response.

    Terrat,

..ai files have no MIME filetype, and Microsoft, in their over-'helpful'
way, when confronted with a filetype without MIME examines the file to
determine the file contents. As a result it often renames .eps files to
..ps, and if a file has been saved as an ai with PDF compatibility will
    also name that PDF.

Rename the .ps to .eps, open each file in Illustrator and save to .ai
without PDF compatibility and THEN try moving them to the swatches folder.
