Exporting from ID CS2 for importing into Illustrator - Adobe Indesign Windows

I want to design a label for a service bureau to print onto DVDs they're burning for me. They said they only use Illustrator for printing onto their DVDs when they burn them (thermal/ribbon printing, I believe). We're just dealing with plain black-and-white printing, mostly just text. I have InDesign CS2 but not Illustrator. (I also have Photoshop Elements 2.0.) I laid out the design in ID and Exported it to a PDF (I left it at the default, which is Acrobat 5 / PDF 1.4). Default Exporting from ID CS2 for importing into Illustrator

It looks fine on my end when I place the PDF into a new ID doent.

However, the service bureau contacted me and said they couldn't get the PDF to work in Illustrator, and asked me to send a JPEG instead (which is useless because exporting the "text" layout from ID as a JPEG causes a lot of gray-shade blurring, when I started out with solid black type).

At the outset they asked if the PDF I was sending would be "raster" or "vector" and I said I didn't have a clue (and I still don't). The guy wasn't sure which was desired but said some PDFs seem to work and some don't. We haven't discussed it since I sent mine, other than it didn't work in Illustrator for them.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Jay, if they can't print a PDF, they've hardly earned the title "service bureau." Next thing to try is to convert your text to outlines in InDesign, (I wouldn't trust them with a font), then export as EPS. They should be able to open that in Illustrator, (although I suspect they may be running Illustrator 3, so don't count on it).

If you continue to have problems, email your PDF to me and I'll return an Illustrator file that will work.

    Thanks a million, John.

Sounds like I should be looking for a new outfit altogether to be making us dupes of CDs and DVDs, and doing the conversions for streaming video on our site. We don't do much of this -- maybe fifty to a few hundred disks per shot and maybe just once in a few months.

    I'm open to recommendations/referrals. :-)

    Thanks again!
