Exporting from PC to MAC (Help...)

Can someone give me some advice on the best way to export files for use on a mac...

I am using Illustrator CS on a PC, when I export files in AI ver 8 for use on Freehand (Mac) the files can only be opened occasionally. This also happens with PDF files...

What is the best way to export files to be the most compatible for the Mac user....
