    Default Exporting Vector Graphics

    Hi,
I have just made a logo in freehand. its is vector format. Question is Can I
export it, say in photoshop, in same vector format? I tried different formats
but they all distort (i have tried different export formats). I want to use
different sizes of the same logo in different applications. i don't know what
to do. Is there a possibility to use the same logo without distortion? Can
anybody help or am I confusing you people?

    Jay,

    How is the image distorting?

I would export the file from FreeHand as a Illustrator 7.x file, then have
    Photoshop raster the file.

Of course you may want to completely by pass Photoshop altogether and Export
an EPS with TIFF Preview (Win) or Quark EPS. You could also save a TIFF and
increase the DPI up to 150 or 300 to allow quality printing of the file.

Between the EPS and TIFF you should have a format that most applications can
    read.

I pull vector graphics into Photoshop all the time and don't have any problems.
If it's a fairly simple graphic I can copy in FH and paste in PS. Otherwise I
export the graphic as a generic EPS then open that in PS. If it's still
distorting, group the graphic in the vector program and write down the
dimensions (in FH this is in the Object pallette), then while opening in PS it
will ask what size/dimensions/resolution you want, enter the dimensions you
wrote down and deselect the Constrain Proportions check box if necessary.
    That should do it.

    Jay and BAD,

I am looking into some issues with the new version of Photoshop CS (Creative
Suite). Nothing regarding distortion but difficulties in copy and paste
    between FreeHand and Photoshop.

    Arrow Re: Exporting Vector Graphics

    Hi Jay,

Obviously you made the graphic/illustration in Freehand to keep it's vector format and functionality. Rasterizing it in Photoshop will not give you that vector functionality. Not a great idea to rasterize it and remove all your vector reasoning.

I suggest you 'save as' or 'export' as an Illustrator file. I am really not sure why it would distort. If Illustrator is not an option, try Saving or exporting as a PDF. PDF's will retain all the vector data and stay resolution independent - unless you tell it otherwise. Use the default 'Press-quality' setting in Acrobat when creating it. This will embed the fonts (if any), keep vector data, not down-sample or convert your colours.

If you really must use Photoshop, I suggest you import it rather than make it raster. Photoshop can keep vector data using smart objects and layering. Of course, your final usage will be the determining factor.

If you are using it for print purposes, you will want to keep it vector. Indesign, Quark, Acrobat all keep the vector data intact when creating or exporting a final print file. If it's multi purpose, by all means keep your final file in vector format and various versions for the different other purposes.
