Default extending elements of table to any width

I opened a start page in Dreamwaever 8, (one of entertainment Home pages). The
main page background is dark blue, but in the top part of table the back ground
is black and there is a divider line which is red. Even on very high
resolutions the red and black banding is extended to the limits of the width of
    the screen.
When I create a simple table and recreate the elements, the black and red
elements are cut short on high screen resolutions. I noticed that on the start
up page the top right element had a width of 100%, but when I copied this on my
page it made no difference. Not even sure if it is a table issue, so unsure
what to search for in the number of help files. Pretty sure also that the page
is not made up of frames, which of course could be extended on any width- Any
    help anyone?

OK, I'm just a rank beginner in all of this, but could it be a CSS stylesheet
specifying a background or a background image that you are seeing (which is not
    directly contained in the table)?

That would be what I would check next.

It could be. Background images tile forever....

I created a graphic and tiled it as a background and yes indeed the problem was
solved, However this was not the real answer. If you try and open the said
start page in Dreamweaver and in edit mode zoom right out, you can see where
the 2 coloured bands stop and if selected the whole page is encapsulated in one
table. It is only in preview that the 2 cloured bands have unlmited width.

It could be a CSS style, but surely CSS is a form of template for the
properties of the page layout and surely what can be done as a CSS file can be
done as a stand alone page. Anyway I have solved the problem rather crudely in
stretching the bands across the width of the page, but have not really solved
the initial problem. - would still like to know why.

    <td colspan="8" bgcolor="#cc3300">

It's the background color of a cell that spans the entire table.

What brutally bad code that is.... 8(
