    Default Extension compatibility

I am seriously considering upgrading from Dreamweaver CS3 to CS4 and I would
like to know whether extensions working under CS3 are installable in CS4
otherwise my code will, in many cases, not work. Anyone can assist ? Thank you
    all.

That will vary from extension to extension. You'll have to contact each
vendor to see if their product will work in CS$

:smile; Many thanks for your assistance. I realize that each vendor shall have
to tell whether there is compatibility or not but most of my extensions, say
80%, have been downloaded from old Macromedia Exchange and these are the ones
which make me worry. On the other hand can I have CS3 and CS4 running from C ?
The problem is that the public website I manage (relative to trekking and
backpacking) has some 600 pages and due to very specific content problems I
have been unable to use templates. Thanks very much. I am afraid that I shall
have to stick to CS3 .......

I currently have both CS3 and CS4 on my machine for the very same reason to test extension compatibility. I just installed them into separate directories.

    Hi keco86,

Thank you for taking the trouble to answer. Could you give me some more
details about the installation like configuration, ertc. Does it take CS3
settings on CS4. When, should it be the case, you uninstall CS3 is there
anything lost. Has the code under CS3 been modified somehow. Any extensions not
working. Which. My notebook runs under Vista Home Premium beyond 2 Ghz speed,
plenty of HD disk space and with 4 Gb memory. As I mentioned before my website
is far too large to make experiments although one can always work with a copy
to see what happens. What really matters is that, as you say, positively one
can install both versions on C but it is not clear whether CS4 install causes
problems or not on CS3 install if one has to go back to CS3.
Please clarify and I will do the same and report what happened in my case.
Many thanks again for your kindness in trying to put some light on the matter.

    Default Re: Extension compatibility

I did an entirely separate install of CS4. When I downloaded it from the site
and had to choose a folder to install the files into I actually created a
folder in the Adobe folder called 'Adobe Dreamweaver CS4'.

I don't know about extension compatibility but this process did create a
second extensions folder so my version of CS3 was not affected AT ALL. I could
then import my extensions from CS3 and in the manager you can choose to
activate or deactivate them if they are causing you problems.

I haven't uninstalled either version so I don't know but I imagine one
wouldn't affect the other as they are completely separate instances. As far as
settings because I didn't overwrite a previous version I didn't get any of my
    settings for CS3 with CS4.

On a side note my testing of my extension for CS4 went fabulous!

I shall follow your lead taking into account all considerations you put in
    writing.
If there is anything new I shall report it for your benefit and for all others
    to see.
    Again many thanks for your valuable assistance:smile;
