Re: "extrude" in photoshop
Isn't this technique along the same lines as what Phosphor shared with us before?
A little demo of some of the possibilities I threw together (about 96KB)

Re: "extrude" in photoshop
Thanks for your replies. I realize that I should have stated my question clearer.
Pierre > Inderdaad, I used smudge at 100% on a path on all images. Interesting thread btw.
Patty > That does look very similar. It looks like Phosphor used less than 100% strength.
hot_denim >
-Make a radial gradient (you can see it on the BG)
-Start a path at the centre of the gradient (You can use guides or the grid for precision)
-select the smudge tool. Strenght at 100%. Check 'use all layers'. Go to Brushes palette/Shape Dynamics. Set 'control' to fade and 'steps' to the length of your path. 'Minimum Diameter' to 1%.
-New layer. Stroke the path with smudge.
-Hide layer. New layer. Change path and stroke again
-I did some copy-paste to weave the tentacles together.

Re: "extrude" in photoshop
I swear I've seen the tutorial for that tentacle looking one somewhere. PS7 down and dirty tricks? Also seen similar on the web.
Anyway here's how patty's example was done. Technique by HappyPhosphor.

Re: "extrude" in photoshop
That tentacle business was all the rage at the TeamPhotoshop Forum and at the old DesignsByMark Forum.
Many people came up with different ways of doing it, but it was pretty much decided that what everyone was trying to replicate was originally done in a 3D app.
Stimulating exercise, nonetheless.

Re: "extrude" in photoshop
A link to what, Dave?
The old DesignsByMark forums are permanently off the air.
And you'd have to do a search [string: "tentacle"] of the TeamPhotoshop.com forums, just as I would. (BTW, if you've never been there, Teamphotoshop.com has a lot of tutorials you might want to look at)

Re: "extrude" in photoshop
Hmm indeed Phosphor.......It looks like you're way ahead of me. I didn't even know what photoshop was in 2001.
I suspected that there would be photoshoppers who are familiar with this technique, but I couldn't find anything about it. I'll look harder next time.

Re: "extrude" in photoshop
Outside of some thin references to using the Smudge Tool (not in the same way as we have been experimenting with) in —I think—the book "Inside Photoshop [insert version number]" by Bouton, et al, this has been a very underexplored technique.
When I first discovered it, (independently, before I saw it in the book) I was creating images that were blowing people's doors in. When I explained that I didn't own a digitizing tablet, people were completely dumbfounded. I didn't reveal how I was doing it for about 6 months (In the thread I linked, above). It still seems to be relatively undocumented, at least as far as my extensive travels around the Web have revealed.
You're right, Alias...there's SO much potential for expanding the technique, I'm kind of surprised it hasn't caught fire.
