Fade Text Direction - 2nd post - help! - Adobe Illustrator Windows

Hi, I'm trying to make a word fade out in a certain direction but am unable to do this... As an example, let's take the word "sunshine". I would like the letters "sun" to be almost transparent but the letters "shine" almost opaque. The letter "e" would be the darkest while the letter "s" from "sun" almost 100% tranparent. If I feather this word, I cannot direct the effect. Any quick way to accomplish this? Julian R Kowalski told me to try a transparency mask but that is not working for me. Can anyone explain how to apply this transparency ...

    Luke:

Make a horizontal linear gradient (black left to white right) in a rectangle that just covers the word. Select the word and the rectangle and in the Transparency palette menu (upper right triangle) select Transparency Mask.

If you just want to mimic transparency you can add a new fill to the word in the Appearances Palette, an with the new fill selected in the palette make a linear gradient with background color left to whatever color right. steve
