Failure in configuring a Hercules video card - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

Hi there ! I have setup Linux RedHat 7.2 on a HP Compaq Pentium 4. Everything went allright up to the X configuration step. Default Failure in configuring a Hercules video card

    Hi there !

I have setup Linux RedHat 7.2 on a HP Compaq Pentium 4. Everything went
allright up to the X configuration step. I just can't get X to work, even
though I have had little or no trouble configuring my previous three
systems, including an IBM laptop with the same RedHat distro.

I have attempted many trials using 'Xconfigurator'. Nothing automatic has
worked, and the videocard is not reckognized. It is an

    'Hercules 3D Prophet 4500'

While attempting to configure manually with Xconfigurator, I have browsed
the list of supported video cards. Although many Hercules cards are being
supported, the 3D Prophet 4500 is not listed, or else it is under another
name. I have ran these tests using two different monitors, the first one
    was a HP D2826 15", the second one was a HP 71 D8901A (17")

Could someone tell me how to manually configure that system, where to find
drivers, or else, what parameters should be used to get it working. I have
tried a few usual things such as configuring with a SVGA generic...
nothing worked so far. I don't mind if it works in a mode that does not
take advantage of all possibilities of the system: a 16 bits 1024x768
would be allright, and even a 16 bits 800x600 could do.

Thanks in advance for any insight

I haven't worked with that particular card. What model computer is this in?

    It is a HP d330 uT (DF394T).

The videocard is just not reckognized by XFree86. True enough, its name
does not appear in the list of HERCULES cards. The only thing I have
been able to do, is to get it reckognized as 'generic VGA 16', not even
as SVGA. Needless to say that the result is pretty despicable ! If I
only knew what kind of videocard it was, I could maybe carry more trials
as approaching models or categories... Where could I find specifs for
    that HERCULES 3D PROPHET 4500 card ?

I have tried this, but I miss the specs for the video card ; I only have
the name (HERCULES 3D PROPHET 4500), nothing else. This card is not
reckognized during the X configuration, it is not listed in reckognized
    HERCUKES cards.

None of these were compatible. In the end, I gave up and swapped video
cards with a collegue ; I now have a Geforce II card, which has been
reckognized right away and works well.

Thanks to everyone for your help.
