FH8 crashes when redrawing placed Tiffs under Mac OS 9
Hi everyone,
I recently had to "upgrade" to OS 9 for software compatibility reasons but now it appears that this broke FH8 8.0.1b:
I've been experiencing a nasty problem with placed Tiffs (and JPEGs, not that I use those a lot): FH crashes randomly when redrawing these images, sometimes it quits on opening a document including images, sometimes it quits upon import and other times everything works just fine for a while but suddenly it quits when refreshing the display.
In all cases the error I get is type 10 or 11 - it seems to quit while reading in the image data from disk
It usually does not happen with EPS files (well, only on very rare occasions) and neither with the display set to "Fast Preview". Unfortunately this is not a workaround as sometimes I need to accurately place vector art on top of an image.
I'm getting this same crash behaviour on 2 quite differently configured Macs so it can't be hardware specific. Also things work just fine under OS 8.6 but switching between startup disks has been quite a hassle.
I have spent hours investigating possible causes to no avail. Here's what I've tried:
1. upping the memory use of FH to 160.000 MB and beyond
2. turnig VM off
3. starting up with only Apple extensions enabled
Is this a known bug or has anyone else run into this?
Any help is very much appreciated!
Cheers Martin

Re: FH8 crashes when redrawing placed Tiffs under Mac OS 9
Do you by any chance have your Colour Management Type
(File->Preferences->Color) set to Kodak Digital Science? I've seen
problems like this before with KDS in various versions of FH under OS 9.
It could be that one of the Extensions needed to use that particuar CMM
has gone missing in the OS update. I gave up on Kodak's CMM a while ago,
due to the confusingly numerous, cryptically named extensions it
requires, and the crashes it caused in FH. If KDS is your problem, then
you could either switch to using ColorSync (as I do) or another method
of colour management, or reinstall Freehand, which should reinstall the
neccessary extensions.

"Do you by any chance have your Colour Management Type

That's a hint! Indeed I use KDS as ColorSync unfortunately isn't an option in FH8 and KDS seems to be the only way to get pretty close to printed output.
I had made sure to move the Kodak CMM extension over into the new system folder. However this is the flavour of the Kodak extension that gets installed by ColorSync and not by FH. It supposedly covers all aspects of the various single Kodak extensions that get installed by FH so I removed them long time ago without running into problems...
until I installed OS 9! I will need to investigate.
Thanks a lot!

Martin,
I believe OS8 and OS8 handled Colorsync profiles differently. See this
technote:

If that's not the issue you might be able to find clues if you do a search
for "Freehand 8" here:

Re: FH8 crashes when redrawing placed Tiffs under Mac OS 9
Thanks for your help, Danny & Judy,
I reinstalled the Kodak extensions, that did not help. However switching to "Kodak Color Tables" as opposed to "Kodak Digital Science" seems to stop the crashing without affecting the display quality dramatically.
I also reorganized the ColorSync profiles as described in the tech note mentioned by Judy.
For the time being things seem to work fine.
Thank you so much for your help!
Cheers Martin

Re: FH8 crashes when redrawing placed Tiffs under Mac OS 9
O.K. here's my update on the situation:
1. Reorganizing the ColorSync profiles as described in the tech note mentioned by Judy didn't improve things when using Kodak Digital Science: crashes still occurred.
2. I finally settled for selecting "Kodak Color Tables" instead and haven't had a single crash since.
Thanks again for all the suggestions!
Cheers Martin
