Re: FH9 Background layer not gray
Here's one thing you might check: The background layer won't grey out is if
it is above the horizontal seperator bar in the layers panel. Only layers
below the bar are greyed out.

Re: FH9 Background layer not gray
I'm not very familliar with NT or 2K, but I'm guessing it may be a display
driver issue. You might check that by launching Freehand under a Windows
default driver and see if the condition persists.

have at some point exported a raster image with with 'Alpha Includes
Background', FH disabled they graying of your background layers to create
the alpha masks and forgets to reset it back.
Ian Kelleigh describes it in detail here and tells you how to restore your
background to normal grayness:

Incredibly, this is still happening in FHMX! Hey Macromedia, isn't it about
time to fix this?

Re: FH9 Background layer not gray
Changing the bitmap export defaults did the trick (explained in www.freehandsource.com).
Thanks to everyone who replied.
