Default FHMX white exports to GIF as off-white

I exported this image to GIF from FHMX, color management OFF, Preview mode:

http://www.judyarndt.ca/fhmx/character_corners_fhmx.gif

Notice the background color. On my FHMX page there was a default white
background rectangle with black stroke behind the lettering. Export settings
were 'no dither', 'web snap adaptive'. Notice that the background is not
white. The FHMX eyedropper picked up '252r 248g 241b'.

When the same image is exported with the same settings, except from FHMX's
Fast Preview mode, the background white is pure white. Picked up with the
eyedropper, the color list shows '256r 256g 256b' for pure white. (Of
course, we all know that should really read '255r 255g 255b', but that's
another bug and has already been reported.)

What gives? Why would the Preview mode affect the color of White?

Okay, I think I figured out what's happening. Rather than the preview mode,
I think it's the 'Transparent Background' checkbox in GIF Options dialog
that changes white. If you leave it checked, even if you don't need a
transparent background, it changes white to a color so it can index pure
white as the transparency color.

From FHMX online help under GIF Export:
"The Exact and WebSnap Adaptive palettes do not support Transparency."

Now I'm really confused. I had 'WebSnap Adaptive 256' selected when I
exported. My head hurts.
