Default Figure Callouts and Arrows in Illustrator 9

I currently use MS Word to create call outs (text label arrows) and curved line arrows. I am interested in doing this in Illustrator 9. The figures that I add labeled arrows to range from Cad drawings (line and solid) to photos. I have had difficulty getting some photos in some graphics software and keeping jpeg image quality high when translating between formats. For future editing, I would like to be able to keep the image in illustrator along with the call outs (text labels and line arrows)and translate the image to a jpeg when inserting into a Word document. Does any one know how to do these things? I realize that there are many questions being asked and I can clarify any matter if I have not made the questions clear?

    Thank you in advance,

Default Re: Figure Callouts and Arrows in Illustrator 9

I would put the JPEG on one layer, lock it and draw the arrows and text over it on another layer.

I'd use the Arrowheads effect (Effect>Stylize>Add Arrowheads) to add the arrows, although the effect has its tricks, starting with the fact that the arrowhead is added after the end point of the line, and reveal a white background arrow at small line width. It works, nevertheless.

I'd also put a rectangle over the area that will be exported, create the Crop Marks (Edit>Crop Marks>Create) and use the Save For Web dialog (File>Save For Web) to export a JPG of the resulting art.
