I also am confused about the way the original "file info" written in photoshop 6 and XMP data written photoshop 7 can be interpretted in Photoshop CS. If whilst running adobe CS , you load a file written in Photoshop 6 (the complete Image file), does the saved CS version now have the image data ie (title, description,keywords etc written into the latest format.? How does the latest way that CS writes the "File Info" differ and what are the advantages?

I can't answer your questions about how "file info" from Photoshop 6 or 7 is interpreted and saved in Photoshop CS. But I know that Adobe has deepened their support of metadata, and has been standardizing its use in the Creative Suite (CS) applications. You'll find File > File Info in at least InDesign CS and Illustrator CS. If you save metadata with your Photoshop file in most formats (PSD, TIFF, JPEG, etc.), and place it in InDesign CS, you can read the file info for the image using the Info palette or the Links palette. And if you use Version Cue, the new file management program included in the Creative Suite, using metadata is essential to tracking versioning, and to search for versions.
