File locking in XP
The issue i'm experiencing may be more related to XP Pro than with Illustrator itself, but it only seems to be affecting Illustrator EPS files...
PROBLEM:
If I try to save, move or delete an Illustrator EPS (this problem doesnt seem to affect every EPS file, just some) I get a windows error message. Here is an example of one when trying to move a file...
"Error Moving File or Folder
Cannot Move 'filename': It is being used by another person or program.
Close any programs that might be using the file and try again."
Of course I have checked if any programs are running and a reboot doesn't help either. It would appear the files have locked in an open state. These files are not on a network, but local on my hard disk, but I do have my XP PC on a Windows 2000 Domain. I have read on Google about a file locking problem with XP and 2000 server. But my files are not on a server!
Any ideas on this odd problem would be much appreciated.
Regards
Martin Griffiths

Re: File locking in XP
Martin,
First check to see if your file has READ ONLY attribute (Right click file/Properties). If so, click that attribute off (all files stored on a CD have Read Only attribute). If that's not the problem, reboot your system. On XP, go to your Temp folder (C:\Documents & Settings\yourusername\local settings\Temp) and delete all files. Clean out your Recycle Bin. Now open Illustrator and see if you can work the files.
