Re: File Repair Company
Anyone that claims to be repairing a broken PSD file is probably just a graphic designer recreating it. To my understanding, a broken PSD file is unrecoverable. Unless Chris Cox says otherwise, I will stand by that.

Re: File Repair Company
Repairing a PSD,
Reparing a PSD file is possible, but it would need one hell of an intelligent program to repair it. And if the file was repaired manually as a data file, it would also need an intelligent person and also lots of time and patients and could be a pain staking task, ..all depends on the amount/type of damage. And when it was repaired, what was salvaged would also vary due to amount/type of damage ?
I don't think there is a program , or anyone has gone too the trouble, and it is a lots... of trouble to write a program to do it (and do it for themselfs, not to sell the program). I also doubt that someone would regularly offer to generally repair PSD files (if they did actually do a good job/their best to try to repair them), even if you paid them..... due to the trouble etc.
This is diffrenet than say reparing other graphic files e.g. BMP..or a DOC/Word file etc. I talk specifically PSD here.

Re: File Repair Company
It's not unrecoverable - just highly unlikely to be recovered intact....
I'm sure that someone could spend several days with the format documentation and a hex editor and get something to load....

HD,
Reparing a PSD file is possible, but it would need one hell of an intelligent
program to repair it.
How can you possibly say that? How do you know it's possible.
What exactly, do you know about the temp file format, or any other PSD format for that matter, that is above an beyond what we know - to wit, your image is toast.
I don't want to be a jerk, but it's statements like these that make one want to totally disregard what little credibility you have.
It's absurd, to even suggest it's possibility to a forum poster...

Re: File Repair Company
There are lots of utilities around to modify bitmap image files; I've written some myself. Generally, they modify documented fields in file headers, or patterns within files--these things are always at known locations in the files.
Modifying a file that has chunks missing is a different thing, and even if it's missing from an easy place in the file, at best you can replace that missing data with black or white. It's unlikely that a low-level disk editor could make sense of random binary data. If the header is badly corrupted or a cluster-worth out of the middle has disappeared, finding anything useful would be unlikely.
This kind of tool takes many hundreds of hours to write--who would buy it? A solid back-up policy is better insurance.

Does Adobe publish the file format specs somewhere, or would one have to reverse engineer the format?

Because I deduced it, because if you modify the damaged file in a particular way dependent on the damage, then you can can fix the file (not that you will not loose some of the information, maybe you wont loose any...depends..case to case).
What exactly, do you know about the temp file format, or any other PSD

Temp file format; Nothing, I have not really put photoshop into haevy use,...yet, nethier am I in a line of work where I 'have' to. I don't think i've even spotted the temp file(s) yet (not that I dont have an idea of where to look etc.., just that I have not seen a reason to go there yet, and also that time got took up with other things to do).
I was not refering to the temp file format. It was the PSD file format I was refering to (so was topic poster).
What I know about the file format; I have the PSD specification for the file format, so I can know everything about it.
I don't want to be a jerk, but it's statements like these that make one

....why do I have 'little' credibility ?.... ;->

That would be.. uh, the temp folder?
why do I have 'little' credibility ?....
Precisely because of the above. You have this grand knowledge of the PSD specification (version 7 I presume), you have studied it so that you know everything about it, and in the same breath, haven't spotted a photoshop temporary file yet: Not that you wouldn't know where to find it, you just haven't had occasion to clean out your TEMP folder...
Doesn't hold an ounce of water. You deduced it. Your powers of deduction are simply amazing.
In point of fact, the answer to the OT of the post is: you don't know. Not to theorize that it's possible, rather, YOU don't know if a company exists that can repair Photoshop or Illustrator files. Anything is possible with enough money and desire, hell they learned how to take a tube filled with fuel and make it fly.
But the fact is, you bounce in, and tout this information as if some kind of authority on PSD, when *I* for one, know you've been using Photoshop for less than a year, and all of a sudden you're the expert on the file specification so that you might know everything about it, YET, haven't had occasion to visit your temp folder.
If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck...

Re: File Repair Company
That would be.. uh, the temp folder?
I have not had a reason yet to take note of the file(s) in my temp folder, i.e. I delete all files in there.
...haven't spotted a photoshop temporary file yet: Not that you wouldn't

TEMP folder...
No...I know where my temp folder is, But have never had the reason to look at the files and see are there any temp created by photoshop in there amongst the other temp files. I.e. when I have paid visits to the temp folder, it is for other reasons...or maybe to clean it out totally (i.e. delete eveything, thus not requireing me to distinguish photoshop's temp files amongst other temp files).

No, i don't know if a company exists that can repair Photoshop or illustrator files.
But I have not said that it exists or does not exists, i have not even refered to a company. I have commented on the photoshop's data file.
But the fact is, you bounce in, and tout this information as if some kind

It does not take an authority on PSD to say what i've said. I know I have not used photoshop for long, infact I have not used photoshop much, id say ive only learnt photoshop and had to load it a few fimes to do something basic such as crop/resize/contrast brighness,..reason for loading it was that I did not want to load another image editor that I have used more that photoshop because I wanted to get an oppourtunity to get as much use/used to of photoshop as i can as I will not generally get to use it or use it frequently, so even if the use is basic so be it. I wanted to say that even if it has not been done or nobody is doing it, it does not mean that it is not possible that something probably could be done.
I'm not an expert on the file spec. I'm not an expert on any file spec. Sometimes I am an expert at something for sometime.
The temp folder; again, yes I know of it, I end up doing something in it at least every week. I have had Windows 2000 for a bout a year and a few other Windows OS's leading from the days of DOS and it's temp folder.

Do a search for PSD at <http://www.wotsit.org/>. Versions through 4 are there.
