File size change mystery. - Adobe Illustrator Windows

I've a 4 layered file 1920 pixels x 1080 pixels created in CorelDraw 11 and 'saved as' an Illustrator 7 file. I've also the same file 'exported' to both the Illustrator 7 and EPS formats from Corel. All the files have a bounding box the exact size of the doent. When the file(s) are opened in Illustrator CS on my PC running Windows XP Pro, they are only 461 px by 259 px. If I import the same file(s) into After Effects 6.5, they are the same size as in Illustrator. Other than the size of the doents, the files ...

Any ideas why the files size would change or any way to prevent it? I hate having to resize everything before I can work with the files.

    Thanks,

    David,

It is a little hard to follow your description because Illustrator doesn't really measure things in pixels. It has a pixel unit, but it is hard-wired to be the same as a point (1/72 inch), instead of being adjustable in size like true pixels are in an image editing program like Photoshop.

What fraction of an inch are your pixels in CorelDraw?

At 300 dpi, your 1920 pixels x 1080 pixel doent would be 6.4 inches by 3.6 inches, which is the same size as the Illustrator file. (6.4*72=460.8; 3.6*72=259.2). So if that is what's going on, your file size is OK. Just remember that Illustrator doesn't really have pixels at all, and is only using pixel as a synonym for 1/72 inch.

If you want to have Illustrator say that the file is 1920 px by 1080 px when you display measurements in pixels, then you could get that by setting your doent resolution in CorelDraw to 72 dpi but keeping the dimensions at 1920 px by 1080 px. But if you did that, your doent would be 26 2/3 inches by 15 inches when opened in Illustrator, which is probably bigger than you want. It is better to forget about pixels and just make sure that your doent is the desired dimensions when measured in some spacial units like inches, points or millimeters.

    Teri ...

Thanks you ... you were spot on. There is a doent resolution setting in CorelDraw which was set at 300 dpi. By changing that to 72 dpi, the subsequent files opened in Illustrator now show a doent size of 1920x1080 px. The same files, when imported to After Effects, drop in exactly as designed because AE sees the composition sizes as a full 1920x1080 px.

It is such a pleasure when all the software plays nicely together.

Thanks again for pointing out the problem.
