Default File Size Grows When Graphic is Scaled to 50%

I an using Illustrator CS (11.0).

The first ai file created was a total of 63,769K (full of data and detail garnered from 2 eps files). The file was scaled down 50% and the arrowheads (2) were decreased 1 pt. to fit the newly scaled graphic. No other changes were made, and the file was saved in once more in ai. Its size increased to 109,025KB.

This file was imported (by reference) into a FrameMaker document. It takes 15 minutes to print the one page directly to a printer with 6.7G of usable harddrive(does not go through the LAN print server). My computer has 1,046,508K physical memory with usually 771,300K available.

Can this file be decreased without impacting the print quality? (I know it is asking alot, but I edit and format for a very discerning readership)

Yes, I saved the file to a different file name. That is how I can compare file sizes.

    AMB,

Deleting all unused brushes, styles, objects and swatches before saving can
reduce file size quite a bit

How do I delete these items? I did do a delete on the empty text paths etc. (in order to reduce file size per user help guide) and the file size actually grew to 110,591!

    AMB,

Just select them in the palette (multiple select with shift+click) and drag them to the little Bin Icon at the base of the palette

AMB: From the flyut menu click 'select all unused', then click the trash can icon. A little quicker than above.

Oops, I've already done that. It didn't help. I finally decided to pdf the entire file. Then it prints fine. The time it takes to pdf either the problem section or the entire file is about the same, and is less time that it takes just to print my problem page.

    Thanks for all your help!
