    Default File Sizes

I'm using a Canon S400. Pictures are saved as JPEG images, with a file size (that I read somewhere) of about 2 MB, depending upon the actual subject.

When I download to PSE2, it is saved as a 20 MB file approximately.

Can anyone explain what is happening ?

    Thanks

    George,
JPG is a compressed format. Perhaps you are confusing the file size on the disk of a JPG image ( 2 MB ) with the actual memory size of the image once it is "uncompressed" into Elements . The actual size of an RGB image in Elements is the product of the pixel dimensions ( 3719 x 3688, for example ) , times 3 ( for 3 bytes, 8 bits of data for Red, Green, And Blue ) . My image is 39.2 MB, but would be different sizes saved on the disk drive, depending upon which compression options I selected for my JPG save .

    Hope this helps

    :-)

    Default File sizes

I am a recent convert from Freehand and Quark to Illustrator and Indesign and find that the file sizes are stupily big. An advert in Freehand would be around 100k becomes 2MB in Indesign, I have had some become 30MB. I am not embedding the images so what am I doing wrong?

Is there any way to trim Indesign files?

If you “Save as” your file, with the same name at the same place, you will see that the size decreases. I just did it a few minutes ago (was 61.6 MB before, 7.5MB after).

I noticed the same as David, however a "Save as" does not have any
    significant effect here.

What exactly is responsible for the increased file sizes, embedded HQ
    previews of images perhaps?

Only if you placed 72ppi images and scaled down.

Try to apply no ICC profiles (edit > apply profile)
A CMYK profile alone weighs up to 1.5MB

Does this not cause problems with outputting for print? Why do ICC profiles exist if not?

"Save as" seems to only save a very little amount of space.

If you get 100kb files from FreeHand they won't contain any ICC profiles.
Therefore I assumed that's what you wanted.
If your workflow calls for CM, byte the bullet and accept filesizes of at least 1,5 MB.

There are many discussions here about the pros and cons of colour management. Let's not start another one.

    Thank you
