file sizes in illustrator to big?
am drawing small objects in illustrator that involve small paths and many points/ anchors. the problem i am getting is that as i copy and paste to create more and more of the small objects the time between each action takes longer and longer. i have tried to create outlines of paths and remove unwanted points in pathfinder. i have converted to RGB as i heard that it takes up less memory. my file sizes are about 60mb and the document size 62x62cm. does anybody recommend any solutions, there must be an answer. i am using illustrator 10 on mac os 10.3.1

I'm using Illustrator CS on my Mac...how do I allocate more memory to this application? It's running very slooooooow. In older versions I did this by hitting "command I" and upping the memory allocation...I don't have that option in CS. Help!

overall size of your drawing by scaling it (making sure not to ruin your
line point sizes if that's an important factor.)
You can't allocate more memory, but you could work in Preview Mode so that
you don't have to redraw your document constantly; you just see the
wireframes.
Kind Regards,

Re: file sizes in illustrator to big?
Susan- Illustrator CS Under OS X like all apps in OS X do not require the user to set the memory that the app uses. The OS will allow the app to use ALL of your available ram automatically so if you are running out of memory and you are only running Illustrator CS then it's time to buy more ram :)
Photoshop is one of the few apps under OS X that has internal memory management where you can force the OS to carve out and dedicate a specific amount just for photoshop which can help with really large images if you run PS with lots of other apps.

Re: file sizes in illustrator to big?
Ok, do NOT worry about the memory allocation.
the ONLY way i know of to make illustartor files smaller is to make certain that when you save them for the first time (or go back and use the save as dialouge) you uncheck the 'make file PDF compatable' check box. this check box inflates the file by a factor of FIVE.
uncheck it and see what happens.

Re: file sizes in illustrator to big?
Also if you hack the pref file in a text editor (BBEdit,) change the "PDFCompatibility 1" to "PDFCompatibility 0" and by default PDF compatibility will be unchecked for any new saves.
"/aiFileFormat {
/clipboardPSLevel 3
/cmykPostScript 0
/PDFCompatibility 0
"
