Filemaker Pro 6.0 taking an extraordinary long time to load
Heteph,
I'm not certain what is going on here, but all of a
sudden when I click on the icon to start Filemaker Pro
6.01 weird things happen.
A few weeks ago I would get the hourglass and within 30
seconds the main screen would be asking me what type of
file I wanted to load.
Now I still get the hourglass for about 10 seconds or so
then it disappears and all I have is the normal arrow
pointer.
I can click it several times and it begins loading then
seems to just quit.
After I forget about it and move on to something else, I
look down about 15 or 20 minutes later and there is the
Filemaker icon at the bottom of the screen. I can then
click on it and begin working with no further problems.
It seems to me that I may have accidentally removed
something that causes it to load rapidly. So I'm hoping
someone else here had that problem and knows how to
correct it.

I'd suspect the second possibility as the reason in this case

I have been defragging my computer for two days now and it is still not
anywhere near finished. I'm wondering if the fact that it is about 50%
or more scrambled up might be the reason it is so slow. All of my other
programs load normally and windows boots up quickly?
I checked Ad-A-Ware, b ut couldn't find anything that had been removed
that might cause that to happen. Even Microsoft Access loads in just a
few seconds and it is much bigger than Filemaker

Re: Filemaker Pro 6.0 taking an extraordinary long time to load
I had this problem and it was due to a printer that was corrupted. When
I removed the printer from the preferences and reinstalled it, the
problem went away.
I found this pdf while trying to fix the problem. It has suggestions
for what can cause slow loading and opening of files.

Re: Filemaker Pro 6.0 taking an extraordinary long time to load
One thing that has not been mentioned either here or on the link
provided by Tim (Webko). Try deleting FileMaker's own font file called
"FileMaker Pro Fonts.FMF" (close FMP first). Once you've deleted it and
you start FMP, that font file will be automatically rebuilt with the
minimum it needs. On Windows, you'll find the file in a place resembling:
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Application
Data\FileMaker\FileMaker Pro\FMPVersionNo
Let us know if that helps...

Filemaker 6.0 to load. It was taking 15 minutes or more before it
loaded.
So I then uninstalled it and reinstalled it several times so far. I also
installed Filemaker 5.5 this afternoon.
Both of them load up and say "tcp/ip" loaded" The they freeze on the
square screen. Neither will go any further and rebooting the computer
doesn't help.
I have Zonealarm installed and when I start them up they ask for
Internet access which I grant, but they don't go past that point.
So now it seems that neither filemaker product will run...?
What to do now? Any suggestions?

font file and the font that Filemaker hangs on when it initially boots
up. The first time it was a font named "sydnie" There was no such font
in the font folder in control panel. I also ran disk doctor, windoctor,
one button checkup and repaired the errors.
The next time it hung up on some font name "@ming" something.
If it does get past loading the fonts, it hangs after saying "tcp/ip"
loaded. It stops there also.
I ran a complete virus scan of my system. It revealed nothing. Yet
Filemaker refuses to load on my primary computer.
On my older 400MHZ Hewlett Packard Pavilion, Filemaker Pro 6.0 installs
and runs just fine. No problems what so ever.
This is really puzzling considering it ran fine for over a year until it
started loading very slowly.

It will now load, but it took nearly 30 minutes to do so. So until I can
think of something else, I will just open it and leave it open. Once
open it is blazingly fast.
In all my years of compooting I have never seen a program behave this
way however. :-)

This is just a hunch, but does the installation of Zone Alarm coincide

had the same version on both computers for over six months now.
Filemaker loads and runs perfectly on the older, slower 400MHZ computer.
Yesterday evening the startup screen stayed in place for 54 minutes
before it finally placed the name in the folder at the bottom of the
screen indicating it was ready to go.
so I will start it now go nap for a couple of hours then I should be
able to get to work.
I forgot to mention that I had the same problem on this computer when I
went back and loaded Filemaker Pro 5.5 this past weekend. It wouldn't
load quickly either.
So I don't think the problem is in the Filemaker program. I opened
zonealarm when I installed it and it asked for permission to access the
Internet. I promptly gave it to Filemaker so I know that is not the
answer. It is set up to get what it wants online or off-line.
And so it goes!
