Filling complex shapes
I need a way to fill stylized characters so they have a black border and a
white interior (for the letter stroke area only). For example I have a stylized
'g' that is about an eight inch thick. The edges are created using circles and
lines. All are connected properly. I tried to use the trace tool to trace the
inside of the letter so I can color it. but it does a poor job and is VERY time
consuming. I need a way to do a more efficient job. Also, using this trace
tool is there a way to add points after it has traced an area?

When you say 'connected properly' do you mean that the outer path is a
single closed path and the inner path is single closed path? If the 'g' is
constructed as a normal lower-case 'g', then Modify > Join the two closed
paths to create a composite path. Give the composite path a wide black
stroke and a narrower white stroke.
It might be useful to you to type a 'g' and convert to paths. Examine it to
see how it is constructed of two closed paths.
