Default Filters -- What size do I need?

How do you know what size filter to buy for your camera? My Minolta takes a
49 mm because it's written on the front with the greek theta symbol on it.
How can you tell what size if your lens doesn't have that?

Well, trial fitting would be about the only way I guess. In my collection I
have three older canon lenses not marked and trial fitting was the only way.
Of course if mail ordering is your thing, then maybe you can tell the agent
on the phone what lens and he might have something to look it up.
