    Unfortunately, as far as I know you can't. The break characters don't have a unicode number. You can do a search for paragraph endings (^p) and the column break will be found (but also all paragraph ends of course, so you can't change them all at once).

    You can do it with a script though. Try:

    var replaceWithChar = '';
    var myTextFrame = app.selection[0].parentTextFrames[0];
    for(var i = myTextFrame.characters.count()-1; i >= 0; --i)
    {
    if(myTextFrame.characters[i].contents ==
    SpecialCharacters.columnBreak)
    myTextFrame.characters[i].contents = replaceWithChar;
    }

    Put in replaceWithChar the character you want the break to be replaced
    with (example: 'a'). Or leave the empty '' to remove the break. This
    replaces only in the focused text frame. Modify the script to your
    needs.

    Thanks for your help Teus

    Unfortunately it appears that using a ^p will not find the column break either.
    If it could find it, I would find all ^p and replace them with ^p.
    I want to replace the column break with a regular return.

    I am curious if this is just a windows issue. The final template will be made and used on a Mac. So if it works on a Mac then my problem will be solved.

    Thanks again for any help. ;-)

    Try exporting the text, (or a test file with a column break) into IDTags. This will give you an ascii text file that should have something you can replace in Word or Notepad.

    Then you can re-place the IDTagged text and all will be well.

    It is not a Windows issue; on the Mac you get exactly the same.

    If you take Don's approach, the code for a column break is <cnxc:Column> in abbreviated form and <cNextXChars:Column> in verbose form.

    That is strange because I just tried it and ^p does find column breaks. And I'm using CS2 on WindowsXP.

    But the suggestion Teus made will likely solve your problem.

    As I said in the first post, here they are found wit ^p also. DaAce are you sure?

    This little script replaces column breaks on my machine with paragraph ends:

    app.findPreferences = null;
    app.changePreferences = null;
    u = undefined;
    parends = app.activeDoent.search('^p', u, u, u);
    for (i = 0; i < parends.length; i++){

    if (parends[i].contents != '\r'){

    parends[i].contents = '\r';
    }
    }
