    Default fink gnuplot install problems

I've seen similar problems posted various places, but I still can't
break through how to solve it. I'm trying to install gnuplot, for
example, using fink install gnuplot. It worked for a long time and
    finally ends with

I have the latest Apple X11 and xcode tools (from the Apple site) and
have installed the X11SDK package. The message to install the place
    holder: system-xfree86 no longer works.

    My "About X11" shows: X11 1.0 - XFree86 4.3.0

    The fink list xfree86 shows:

    xfree86 4.4.0-1 Darwin and Mac OS X
    xfree86-base 4.2.1.1-16
    i xfree86-base-shlibs 4.2.1.1-16
    xfree86-base-thr...
    xfree86-base-thr...
    xfree86-rootless...
    xfree86-rootless...
    xfree86-shlibs 4.4.0-1

How do I get fink to recognize the apple xfree86 package? Or do I have
to go to the latest xfree86 from source forge, etc.?

    Thanks.

I get no listing when I enter
    fink list system-xfree86
I think I had read that fink no longer used placeholders for xfree86,
but I don't really understand what's what. My fink.conf has the lines:

    Trees: local/main stable/main stable/crypto local/bootstrap
    unstable/main unstable/crypto
    Distribution: 10.3
