Fireworks MX 2004 is so slow I really can't use it.
I'm running it on a 3ghz Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading and 512mb of Ram. It is literally unusable, and I don't know why, since I read the product sheets that say it is much faster.
If you switch to FW, there is a second or two delay. Anything you do, whether it's selecting something from a menu, etc, there is a delay. I had to stop using it and go back to Fireworks MX in order to get anything done. You can't actually buy a machine much faster than the one I have, so I don't understand how an application can be released like this.
I tried it on my laptop (an 833mhz Pentium III), but it was much worse there.

Macromedia has initiated a survey to document and fix these issues.
Visit
http://www.macromedia.com/support/fireworks/ts/documents/emerging_issues.htm
or http://tinyurl.com/pf95 (same link)
and go to "Slow performance on Macintosh OS X"
and click the link for the 2004 MX Performance Survey
(NB: this link is also being used for similar issues on Windows platforms)
If you complete this form thoroughly, it'll help MM to pin down the
issue(s).

I'm using FW2004 on XPpro P4 1.6Ghz 768mb RAM and it is running fine.
Actually I'm working with a 1.9mb file with 13 layers, so far no problems.

Re: Fireworks MX 2004 is so slow I really can't use it.
It is good to know that someone is running Fireworks MX 2004 on a P4 without the speed problems. It means that the program itself is capable of normal speed, so it must be some bug that, hopefully, can be patched.
My old MX version works perfectly.

Do you have an anti virus app checking files?
MX2004 runs like a dream on my Celeron 1.7Mhz laptop. Come to think of it,
the trial ran fine on my 450Mhz PIII, and that doesn't even meet minimum
spec!

Re:Fireworks MX 2004 is so slow I really can't use it.
After I first installed it it was working great.
However in the last couple of days it has started running dog slow. The only thing I could think of was I has installed a bunch of extensions. In the past I have seen extensions that were poorly written trash my copy of dreamweaver so I'm wondering if this could be the case. I may have to leave off the extensions for a while.
Anyway, I'm going to uninstall FMX 2004 and reinstall it. I'll post any feedback to this thread.
Until then back to MX 2003 which still runs like a champ.

Well tried reinstalling but still runs like crap. I'm really bummed as I like the new features on offer.
Guess I'll have to wait for the patch. Next time I'll wait for the patch before I upgrade.

Re: Fireworks MX 2004 is so slow I really can't use it.
If it worked normally one day, but much slower the next, then I'd
definitely check what else changed on that system in the meantime. (You
mentioned extensions, for instance.)
Hmm, another tack is to hit the "Processes" tab in your Task Manager to
see what's actually running... there are a lot of background operations
going on these days.
