No... some of us were raised by snow leopards and became "naturalized"
citizens of the U.S., after the fact. ;o)

Hmm, I did not know that.

The rest of the story below is interesting. I can see you are a very
intelligent woman, but then again I never doubted that.

We really need to leave it (the thread) at this, cuz (<- American
slang!) I don't have anymore Horizontal space for those
    sub-sub-sub-subthreads. :-)

    >
Only just picked up on this .. and have lost the top half of the
thread so my apologies if I repeat something already written.

I used to have a bad time with W98SE becuase I had deinstalled and
reinstalled some of the basic fonts - having a couple of thousand on
my disk I was swapping them all the time.
I had a few programs that used to show a very small curly script font
instead of the expected sans-serif menu fonts .. not in FW but in
    other programs.
This font also showed in IE if the HTML or css set <font> to
"sans-serif" with no others specified ahead of it.
I was told it was because of the way W98SE indexed its fonts; I
eventually fixed it by deinstalling almost all the fonts then
    reinstalling starting with Arial etc.
I had to be very careful with the last one or two fonts left as I
removed the others - the ones used by Windows ( as you might guess !
) and not removing those from the Font Folder but just deinstalling
    them.
So, it seemed to me, it's not about the fonts being in the font
folder, or installed but about the order they are installed (urggh!).

Hope that helps .... dont forget to back up the registry before
    starting !

Can we drag this thread away from the history of our rich language and back on topic please?

Linda - can you tell me WHERE the control/selection of the display text is please?
W98SE, re-install no effect. All required fonts present and correct, maam!

Here I go! "2 countries separated by a common language"

    Right click on Windows desktop
Select Properties from the right click menu
    Click on the Appearance tab
    Under Scheme, select Windows Standard

That should restore the system fonts to their default settings. If not,
then you'll have to reset them manually. To do this, click in the down
arrow of the "Item" selector under the Appearance tab and select each
item listed. For Active Title Bar, for example, you'll see Font: MS Sans
Serif [Western], size 8, color = white, and Bold selected.
