    Not sure if it makes a difference . . . . shot was 300mm lense at 1/180 sec
    .. . . . Isnt there some "rule" about focal length equal to shutter speed to
    avoid camera shake effects?

    Yep! The rule of thumb is that for hand held cameras, the shutter speed should
    be 1/focal length of the lens
    You really can't hand hold a camera with a 300 mm lens at 1/180 sec., and
    expect sharp images..
    And the 10D will make the 300 mm lens act like a 480mm lens.
    You are just going to have to use a tripod on those long tele shots.
    Same advice would hold for your Rebel 35 mm film camera.

    Ahhh.. the dreaded kit lens.

    Get some L, you will enjoy the difference. Your 10D will thank you for it!!

    More of a "rule of thumb", which you seem to have managed to ignore on
    this occasion.

    I have a beautiful framed photograph of a 1959 Austin Bugeye (Frogeye)
    Sprite parked in front of a 1961 Morris Minor Traveller, taken under
    city streetlights.

    In fact the Minor is mine and behind the Sprite was the only place I
    could find to park it, but it fits the picture well. Anyway, this pic
    was taken hand held, with a 50mm lens at 1/8th of a second, because that
    was all the light I had. It was also the last shot on the last roll of
    film we had in my girlfriend's camera that night.

    I took a deep breath and hoped, and it's lovely.

    I've also had my share of rubbish from trying daft tricks like this.

    LOL . . . I was sitting in my dining room near the patio door that goes out
    on the desk. We put bird seed on the deck railing to attrack birds. The
    Squirrels love it also . . . So there I am, with the door open sitting 20 ft
    from a bunch of feeding squirrels and a new camera in my hand . . . hmmmm .
    .. . :-)

    wow they are expensive . . . I see most with the L designation are the white
    lenses I see on tv . . Actually I looked at the 100-400 F4.5-5.6 L Image
    Stabilization Ultrasonic lense yesterday. Thinking when some extra money
    hits the account that I may look at that for my next lense.

    I also bought a 24-85 F3.5-4.5 USM lense when i got the camera . . i added
    another picture taken with that lense.

    Yes they are but the results are worth it. Not all of the L lenses are
    the big white canons. Here is the 17-40 L:

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh5/controller/home?
    O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=279582&is=USA

    and the 24-70 L:

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh5/controller/home?
    O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=264304&is=USA

    If you want a good zoom for less than a king's ransom, the 28-135IS is
    considered to be one of the best non-L lenses from Canon:

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh5/controller/home?
    O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=149629&is=USA

    It has Image Stabilization as well which is a great asset.

    Yep. Forgot the 50mm 1.8. It's on my list of "must buy" lenses when I
    get my 10D as well. The 50mm 1.8 and the 28-135IS are the two that I
    will likely start off with.
