Flash Player 8 does not upgrade earlier versions

We are preparing distribute Flash Player 8 through SMS 2003 and currently
testing the licensed msi.
When I installed Flash Player 8 on my system with Flash Player 7 already
installed, Flash player 8 installs as a separate application rather than
upgrading flash player 7 to 8. I'm pretty sure this is happening because
macromedia changed the name of flash player 8's ocx file to 'flash8.ocx', from
'flash.ocx'. We prefer not to have both versions installed on systems that
already an earlier version.

Does anyone know a way to get player 8 to upgrade version 7 and earlier
through the msi we want to push out?

I thought it was supposed to upgrade older versions.
Have you have any luck pushing it via SMS? I've been trying for 3 days and
have gotten nowhere. The MSI has a package def but it stil bombs. The support
has been pretty bad so far.

I have not resolved how to get it to upgrade the older version but I have been
able to deploy it through SMS successfully. It just installs as a separate
flash version. I pushed the package to several systems with flash player 7
already installed, opened different flash sites and confirmed that it DOES run
the newer version 8 by default.
I'm actually about to advertise the package companywide. It would be nice to
remove the previous versions but that isnt a priority right now.

At what point is the package bombing for you through SMS?

Hi All,

I have encountered this also. It does not upgrade the product, installs Flash
8 along with 7. I have even edited the Flash 8 MSI supplied by Macromedia and
added upgrade codes to support our version of Flash 7. Nothing, still does not
un-install 7 but installs side by side.

I have scripted to Flash 8 install and added a detect and remove mechanism to
the script. It 1st checks if Flash 8 is installed, then checks for earlier
versions of flash (in our org this will be either 6 or 7). If they are
detected, then they are uninstalled...then flash 8 is installed.

I deployed via SMS, seems to work well. A couple of machines were rebooted
automatically to complete the Flash 7 uninstall, so I added REBOOT=NOREBOOT to
the msiexec syntax.

Deploying as we speak...

Really? We are about to deploy Flash 8 this morning at 10am...Any chance I could get that altered msi from you? We'd definitely postpone it if we could deploy this as clean as possible.

try to create a reg file with this keys and after publishing FP8 into a
machine try do aply this Reg file to see if it fixes the problem.

Hi,

The extra files are ok -- or can be deleted. ActiveX only registers and
uses one version of Flash Player at a time. The old file is essentially
leftover, but not in use for Internet Explorer or any other
applications.

I am also trying to get it pushed out with SMS 2003 but no luck so far. I have
also writen a vb.net script that runs after the install and just deletes the
old flash.ocx file. Could you please send me the chnages you made to the MSI.
Any help would be great.
