Flash Player Security
I just read the following article regarding "badvertising", where malicious
programmers are making use of Actionscript and JavaScript to install malware on
a users system.
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2216618,00.asp
My first reaction was to dismiss this article since there were some
inaccuracies in how they described how Flash worked. Also, I was always under
the impression that the Flash Player was inherently secure since it operates in
a "sandbox", meaning it will only generally work within itself with limited, if
any, access to a user's system.
According to this article, Actionscript is somehow partnered with JavaScript
to create a dangerous vulnerability. Since I am not as experienced with
JavaScript, is this true?
I know I had been on a webcam site that used Flash Player and I had somehow
gotten malware installed on my machine before. I suspected an ad that installed
it. I even asked the person I was camming with if their Norton Antivirus just
warned them, too, about a potential threat. After a few weeks, Norton AntiVirus
was finally able to quaranteen and stop the malware from launching IE at
strange times and directing me to ad site. I just stopped using the site after
that.
Mind you, I'm neurotic about installing ANYTHING. I'm a web designer and am
pretty familiar with how these things try and trick you into clicking something
you shouldn't have. I never click popups...even if it looks like a dialogue
window. I'm paranoid (and knowledgeable) enough to just Alt+F4 the whole I.E.
or Firefox window and rather than click something I don't trust.
So, is this article, although moderately inaccurate, somehow onto something?
Is JavaScript the danger and ActionScript somehow the messenger?
I've read the following post at Adobe,
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb402450&sliceId=2,
but not sure if it clearly answers this concern.
