Flash plugin "illegal operation" & browser crash(v8,0,28,0)
After installing the latest version of flash player (v 9,0,28,0): as soon as I
connect to numerous websites (e.g. disney.com and SignOnSanDiego.com) A popup
reports
"Shockwave flash: The plugin has performed an illegal operation. You
are strongly advised to restart Navigator".
A few seconds later Netscape 7.2 crashes. This occurs on 3 computers from
different venders with different OEM installations of Windows XP. This
occurs 100% of the time when connecting to disney.com or to other sights with
flash advertising (e.g. SignOnSanDiego.com).
Since it occured on all 3 computers (different hardware w/ different OEM
installs of Windows XP), I can't believe that noone else has experienced this
problem and yet there is no mention of this problem on the flash player support
website.
When I installed the archived version 9,0,16,0 of the flash player, all flash
errors & browser instability went away further pointing the finger at the
latest version of the flash player. I also uninstalled shockwave v10.0 and
installed the latest v10.1.4r20 just incase there was some interaction, but it
made no difference.
Once I find a Firefox extension for a Netscape feature that is currently
missing in Firefox we will be switching over. However, all the websites in
question still claim to support Netscape 7.2 and everything works fine with the
previous flash player release (v9,0,16,0), so I would hope a solution could be
found. :music;

:disgust;
I too am having the exact same problem. Windows XP, Netscape 7.2. This just
started happening about a week ago, for no reason what so ever. I can't do
anything online. I'm going to try installing a archived flash player like you
did....but I haven't installed the newer version so I don't know why this is
happening.

Re: Flash plugin "illegal operation" & browser crash(v8,0,28,0)
I am having the same problem. Comcast wants me to download Flash and it causes Netscape 7.2 to crash. I can get around it by deleting Flash and reinstalling Netscape 7.2, but I can not use The Fan.

Re: Flash plugin "illegal operation" & browser crash(v8,0,28,0)
I uninstalled Flash. Then attempted to install an older version thru this
website, but there was something wrong with the file, corrupted or what not.
:confused;
After enjoying a few days of surfing the web without getting booted offline, I
did install an unknown version of Flash with no further problems. While
visiting a friends Myspace page, I just click on the little puzzle piece to
install. :grin;

Another reference point:
Have Netscape 7.2 installed on wife's computer and she is experiencing
identical problems as reported here even after installing latest version of
Flash. I am still at Netscape 7.1 and have not experienced any problems when
navigating to sites that crash browser on her computer.

Re: Flash plugin "illegal operation" & browser crash(v8,0,28,0)
I downloaded/ran the Flash uninstall program to uninstall v9,0.28,0. I then
downloaded the Flash 9 archive from:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14266
I extracted/ran the non-IE version: flashplayer9r16_win.exe.
Ever since I did this, Netscape 7.2 w/Flash content has been completely stable
without a single crash or Flash error message; and sites that require Flash v9
are still happy.
My experience is that Flash 9,0,28,0 has a fatal bug with Netscape 7.2 and
the only workaround I have found is to install the previous version (v9,0,16,0)
which completely resolves the Flash/Netscape instability. I still surprised
I havn't seen any mention of this serious flaw in the Flash support topic:
"4a8d52ae?Flash Player 9 Emerging Issues".
Hopefully Adobe will release an update before too long that fixes this problem
since I would prefer to use the current version.

Re: Flash plugin "illegal operation" & browser crash(v8,0,28,0)
There is a scripting issue in Netscape that causes the crash. If you upgrade to the latest version of Netscape you should not have a problem.
Hope that helps,

Re: Flash plugin "illegal operation" & browser crash(v8,0,28,0)
Same problem as everyone else. Netscape 7.2, XP and the latest Flash player.
Three different computers, all same problem. Can't go anywhere online without
crashing. Is Adobe the only option for viewing websites? I can't upgrade to
the latest Netscape (don't care for it AT ALL).
I tried the archive link fposted by chetto1 to download an older Flash Player
but it doesn't run/install -its just a file. Is there any other way to get an
older version?
Please help. I miss my computer.

Re: Flash plugin "illegal operation" & browser crash(v8,0,28,0)
Thanx for responding Ken Toley. I glad to hear that Adobe/Macromedia is at
least aware of this problem.
Unfortunately, upgrading to Netscape 8.x is a non-starter. I am one of many
people who tried Nescape 8 and then reinstalled Netscape 7.2 because of a
significant downgrade in functionality even though it did have some nice new
features. I have been migrating to Firefox since with a handful of plugins,
Firefox has most of the benefits of Netscape 7.2 that Netscape left out of
Netscape 8 plus most of the beneficial features found in Netscape 8.
According barberadasti's post in this thread the same problem exists for
Firefox 2.0 so switching to Firefox wont solve the problem. There are still
enough users of Netscape 7.2 that it still a supported browser for many
websites that limit their supported browsers.
Hopefully Adobe/Macromedia will fix the problem in the next Flash release
(even if it is the result of a quirck/problem with Netscape scripting). Flash
version 9,0,16,0 still works perfectly with Netscape 7.2 and so far every site
I've visited that enforced having Flash 9 has been OK with this version. (The
only drawback is I occasionally get a prompt to install an updated version of
Flash . According to something I read, v9,0,28,0 adds a full screen video
capabilty, but I' havn't found a site yet that allows that so that's not an
issue thus far.

Re: Flash plugin "illegal operation" & browser crash(v8,0,28,0)
FYI: The Adobe page I listed above has links to zip archives for older
versions of Flash. Clicking on
"Flash Player 9 (16.5 MB)" should download fp9_archive.zip. You
need to extract the file flashplayer9r16_win.exe
and run it to install the older version. (Be sure to run the Adobe script to
uninstall v9,0,28,0 1st. A link is on the same page.)

Re: Flash plugin "illegal operation" & browser crash(v8,0,28,0)
Hi Chetto1,
Our goal is that every Flash Player Release is more stable then the previous
version. (Although in this case I am sure it does not seem like it.) Even when
a new version contains new features, you can be assured that significant
efforts have gone into addressing user reported problems and making sure the
Player is as secure and as stable as possible on the systems and browsers we
support. That is the primary reason to upgrade a minor version of the player.
On occasion 3rd party software can cause a problem with the Flash Player. We
do our best to address these issues in the Player but sometimes this effort may
be compromised due to the technical standards we follow, security models, or
other fundamental factors that require a fix by the 3rd party.
It takes time for reported issues to be posted on our support site. The
support engineer?s jobs include reporting issues to engineering,
troubleshooting and working around problems, all in addition to researching,
writing and posting technotes for known issues. They have been researching this
problem for a fairly brief time as direct reports have come in. They will be
posting a technote soon. When you encounter a serious issue with the player
like a crash you should contact technical support. It is the fastest way of
getting to the root of the problem and the best solution for your scenario. If
your problem is common and the solution safe, it will make it into a technote
to help other users.
In this forum are the first reports I have seen regarding a similar problem
with FireFox. If you are getting a crash with both Netscape and FireFox please
log a support incident to give us the best opportunity to research and address
the problem.
Thank you,
-Ken

Re: Flash plugin "illegal operation" & browser crash(v8,0,28,0)
I had the same problem until I followed the link by "chetto1" on 01/02/2007.
Uninstall using the uninstaller, reboot, download and install the flasplayer9
package, and then things work again without crashing. I am using Netscape 7.2
on XP pro SP2.
Hope this helps you as much as it did for me................. Maddmonk

Re: Flash plugin "illegal operation" & browser crash(v8,0,28,0)
I would like to say Hero you are wrong about upgrading Netscape. I use IE 7 and flash crashes with 6 or 7 flash websites in the tabs. I am going to try r16 but r28 doesnt work right at all
