    Default Flash vs Shockwave

Hi, I am a 60+ yr old computer newbie and have a few very basic quesions:

    a) Can you explain what the difference is between a Flash Player and a
    Shockwave Player.

    b) I successfully downloaded Adobe Flash Player (and I may even have a
    shockwave player, not sure)
I would like to get an " ICON on my desktop " for each of these flash
players and shockwave players but cannot figure out how to do that ?

    c) And last, if it's not too much trouble, how do I find out which flash
player AND shockwave player " version " I have on my computer? (someone had
suggested to me to look in Windows>Sytem32 which I did, and found about 40+
files, so I right clicked and went to Properties and looked at the versions,
but none of those 40+ files appeared to be adobe (or macromedia) flash /
    shockwave items.)

For your info, I have Windows Me, 866 MHz, 512 Ram, 40 Gig Hard Drive,
Internet Explorer 6, and utilize Comcast Broadband
(and if you need to know, I do have Adobe Reader Version 6.0.5 downloaded and
    saved as an icon)

    Thank You, Richard

Flash player plays flash movies (made in Flash)
Shockwave plays shockwave movies (made in Director)

They have nothing in common other than both are Adobe products, and both
play there own interactive animated movies.

That makes no sense, as the player you installed is only a plugin/control in
your browser. its not a program that you can run from your desktop.

Look in c:\windows\system32\macromed and right-click on the OCX file(s) in
there to see the version. I'm not sure about hte plugin.

    Hi Jeckyl,
    a) & b) understood completely, Thank you so much.

    c) On my computer, micromed was't in SYSTEM32, so I looked in SYSTEM and it
was there, which was great because then I found the flash / shockwave versions
(In folder FLASH I found versions 6.0.47, 8.0.22 & 9.0.16.0 and in folder
DIRECTOR I found SWDIR.dll which was Shockwave ActiveX Control, version
8.0.0.16). Does the above sound like I have the latest versions of flash and
shockwave ? Again, Thank you so much, you have cleared up a lot of confusion
    that I had.
