Flatten Layers/Flatten Selections - why?

Default Flatten Layers/Flatten Selections - why?

In looking at a couple or tutorials in Fireworks they say to flatten
    layers or flatten selections.

I can't find much explanation in FW help manual, and I have to say I
really don't understand why and when I should want to flatten my layers
    or flatten a selection.

    Could anyone offer some clarification?

    TIA

    Hello,

When you flatten a selection, you are transforming vector objects into
bitmaps. This will allow you to edit the image using the bitmap tools in
    Fireworks.

    I hope this helps.

Before you do flatten your image, I would strongly suggest saving the
editable PNG as backup or if you have selected a few objects to flatten,
duplicate them and move them to another layer. In this way, if you
want to start over again, you only have to go back to your original
objects. Once flattened, of course, you can't edit the objects as vectors.

This I learned the hard way! :D I hope that someone out there benefits
    from my experience!
