Flush Right Type ISN'T FLUSH !!!
Something about ai CS is making me feel like it's still in beta ...
I'm designing a small CD-ROM package, and I typed a couple of lines of text, meant to be flush right. But the first line has this SPACE at the end of it, and there doesn't seem to be any way to get rid of it! It only appears after typing the 10th character. Before that, it has no space, but after the 10th character, the ugly little thing appears. It also doesn't seem to matter what typeface is used, either.
This is UNACCEPTABLE !!! Please, Adobe, test your stuff better than this before releasing it. :-(

I'm not seeing what you are, but then I have no idea what you're doing. Please be a little more descriptive of what you did to get the unexpected behavior. Area type or point type? "Telephone" is OK, but "telephones" is not flush right? It is for me.

Re: Flush Right Type ISN'T FLUSH !!!
My 2-line text is:
"Your Partner in Training(hard or soft return here)
Teachers and Parents"
There is always a bit of estra space after Training, when this is set Flush Right.
That's about all there is to it.

Re: Flush Right Type ISN'T FLUSH !!!
I see what you mean. With 12-pt. type, it's about .75 pt. of extra space. I don't think it should work this way (unless I'm missing something), but you can make it go away by inserting a space at the end of the line, immediately before the hard or soft return.

Re: Flush Right Type ISN'T FLUSH !!!
How are you reproducing this, Gary? I can't. Is this Point or Area type? Do you set the type right justified before or after you set the characters? Are the quotes part of the two lines? I've tried to recreate this every which way and can't.

Re: Flush Right Type ISN'T FLUSH !!!
Doug
Drag out a text box in CS, set it to flush right, 12-pt. Myriad and paste this in:
Tones
Telephones
It seems that the presence of the upper case T adds a small amount of space at the end of both lines (other cap letters do the same, in varying amounts, but cap T seems to impart the most). Check this, zooming way in and watching the end of the line as you delete the T.
It seems to have something to do with the kerning values used in some of the letters. Place the type cursor between the T and o in Tones, hold down the Option key and hit the left and right arrow keys to adjust the kerning, and watch the end of the line jump around. This does not happen in AI 10, or ID 2 or CS.

Re: Flush Right Type ISN'T FLUSH !!!
Try Optical as the spacing and see if that improves your setting.

Re: Flush Right Type ISN'T FLUSH !!!
Optical and "0" gives me right justification as I would expect. Auto yields the ragged right justify for me.

Re: Flush Right Type ISN'T FLUSH !!!
Where are you setting it to Optical and 0? Type menu and Parargraph palette? If I go to the Character palette menu and turn on System Layout, I get the proper flush right - but then kerning looks awful.

Re: Flush Right Type ISN'T FLUSH !!!
Character Palette (command+T)
Set the kerning to either opitical or 0. < A\V >
System layout + Auto kerning still yields ragged right justify for me. Also the kerning is ugly as you mentioned.

Re: Flush Right Type ISN'T FLUSH !!!
You can also set a character style with auto kerning and leading and that will work as well.

You're right - optical kerning appears to correct the problem. Thanks.

Re: Flush Right Type ISN'T FLUSH !!!
Also I just discovered that the standard Normal Character style seems to be corrupt because if you make a new one with the same settings as the normal one that will correct the problem as well.
Really crazy!

New character style still has the ragged right justfy problem with auto kerning for me.
For a positive look upon the text engine. Man am I thrilled about vetical text and character rotation. :)

Re: Flush Right Type ISN'T FLUSH !!!
Vertical text is for Japanese and Chinese and rotation can be use for display and other things.
But auto in the text character style only seems to have the ragged right problem with the default style which if you make a new style with auto it goes away which probably means that is where the problem lies?
