LOL DIY and budget do not belong in a sentence together....whenever I have
a stab at a DIY its always low quality or ends up being stupidly expensive
    LOL

Then again, I'm not very mechanically inclined :)

Last time I tried to use back lit Perspex it was a disaster. Methinks they
use a highly specialised material and even then... flash filling the whole
area is another challenge bound to cost you more than the real thing.

Have a look at the affair CR Kennedy's have. It's a zippered box, lit from
the outside by fluoro lights (again specials) and big enough for bottles and
    power tools etc.

I made one about 15+ years ago when I bothered having a studio, it was easy
to make and worked a treat. I did not bother with the front drop-down bend,
so there was only one curve in the perspex at the transition of horizontal
to vertical and that was easy to bend by applying little heat with a normal
    household bar heater.

My frame was made of 1inch metal box tubing and the perspex simply ed
to it. It was no way a portable thing, but it lived in the corner of my
studio for years and had a kazillion products shot on it. lighting from
behind was easy with one studio flash with a wide diffuser, plus gels could
be added for any colour background required.

I ended up making a second smaller version using clear perspex too, this
allowed for background paper/objects to be placed behind out of DOF and lit
separately, while the product appeared to float in space in the foreground.

When I went through college one of our subjects was "Workshop Techniques"
and this involved welding, woodwork other metalwork etc..... we always used
to ask, "Why are we doing this when we are studying photography?" and the
answer was always "You will need it!" I guess this is exactly the kind of
thing they had in mind.... building our own studio setups, props, backdrops
    etc

You can build this yourself and it will work a treat but just plan it
    carefully first.

Forget BUnning, they don't have any of the bit's you will need, except maybe
    s and a hack saw.
Get a phone book (yellow pages).
Go to "Capral Aluminium" to buy the 1"square aluminium tubing and plastic
adapters which clip it together (show them a picture of what you want to
make). It might cost you $100 in tubes and adapters.
Go to an Acrylic supplier and buy ' "Matt" (not gloss) opaque 3mm (or 5mm)
acrylic' in the size you require. The acrylic is expensive and may cost well
over $100 depending on how much you need.

It will work, it does for me, just used it again last night for a product
    shot.

    Regards
