Default Font on Word/Excel Documents Becomes Smaller When Converted to PDF

When I convert Word and Excel documents to PDF, the font becomes noticeably smaller. I can adjust the documents somewhat before converting to PDF by doing a print preview after I set the printer to Adobe PDF and adding lines to make sure the pages break where they are supposed to. However, the font is still noticeably smaller in the pdf version. I tried de-selecting the "Use printer metrics to lay out document" option in Word, but that didn't make a difference. Any ideas?

    Have an example?

If you have, for instance, 12 point Arial in your Word doc, what does it become in the PDF?
