Font Problems Font Problems Font Problems
Hello,
Doesn't illustrator open PDF's with embedded fonts as editable objects?
I thought so but now have a PDF that opens fine in Acrobat reader and says
the fonts are embedded (in document settings) but gives a font missing error
when opening in Illustrator CS.
Any thoughts are welcome.

It will often work provided the font is owned, licensed and installed
on your computer. It isn't relevant whether it is embedded.

I don't need the font to be editable, though. An outline is fine.

Still, you'd need the font installed to convert to outlines.

Re: Font Problems Font Problems Font Problems
Then why this message?
The font AGBuchBQ-Italic is missing. Affected text will be displayed using a substitute font.
If the font is already embedded into the PDF, why can't it just read that and give me an outline at least? I've even tried saving out of Acrobat into an EPS file, and despite turning on "Convert Text to Outlines", I still get the same message.
Help!

Whoops, just ready your reply, graffiti. Well, that's not cool. Why even embed the font then if you can't open it in illustrator. I don't want to strip the font. I just want to resize or resave the ad as an eps. Hmm...

Why even embed the font then if you can't open it in illustrator.
The purpose of embedding is so that people can view the document as it was intended to be viewed without installing/owning the font. This is something that is "allowed" by the font foundries and, for the most part, is out of Adobe's hands. It's never been meant as a device to allow editing. In fact, PDF has never meant to be an editable format either.
