Default Font size increased in dialogue boxes and pallets

I installed InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop CS recently on a new PC running XP Pro (1Gb ram). On a recent visit to Singapore I bought a new program (yes, a legitimate one!)called Chinese Plus which would allow me to use chinese characters in an English document - something I've always wanted to do. Installation went OK, Word Document was OK, Illustrator was OK, until I glanced at the Font pallet, or for that matter any pallet.

I noticed that the font size had increased slightly, but enough to truncate many of the labels. This had also occurred in any dialogue boxes that I opened.

However, the toolbar was still in the correct font and the programme continued to function.

Even more strange, the equivalent pallet fonts in both Photoshop and InDesign had NOT changed.

After many hours of ininstalling, re-installing, taking the whole suite off and re-installing, problem is still there.

Also, interestingly (a clue, perhaps?) the date and time in Windoctor of Norton's SystemWorks 2003 in now in Chinese!

    Any ideas, anyone? Thanks. Nigel

    Nigel,

Have you tried going into Windows display properties (right-click on your desktop, choose properties, then go to appearance tab)?

Chinese Plus may have changed some of the fonts. Going back to the Windows default theme should restore them.

Have you tried the Windows XP IME (Input Method Editor) for Chinese character input with your applications?

    Harron,

Thank you for some pointers, I'll try the desktop one. Where do I find the IME?

Still puzzled, though, why it did not affect other programs in the CS suite.

    Nigel,

Go to Control Panel and double-click on the 'Regional and Language Options' icon. Go to the Languages tab and make sure 'Install files for East Asian languages' is checked. Then, click on 'Details.'

Under the 'Settings' tab, you should be able to add support (including IME's) for additional languages. You may be asked to insert your Windows installation CD.

Make sure you check 'Extend support of advanced text services to all programs' under the 'Advanced' tab.

Under rare circumstances, advanced text services may cause problems with an application. In such cases, you can disable advanced text services for that program only using the properties | compatibility panel for that program.

More under Windows help (hit F1 from your desktop). Search with keyword 'languages.'

Still puzzled, though, why it did not affect other programs in the CS
    suite.

    Sorry, I have no idea.

Illustrator has been 'language sensitive' since version 7. If you run English version of Illustrator on non-English systems such as Chinese or Japanse, then Illustrator uses your system's default language font as its dialog font, so you can see/edit Chinese or Japanese layer names, swatch names, file names, etc in English version of Illustrator.

Most dialog boxes in newer versions of Illustrator have dynamic layout functionality. Usually, Chinese or Japanese dialog fonts are bigger than Roman dialog fonts due to complexity of each glyphs. Therefore, Illustrator automatically enlarges most dialog boxes and layouts dialog items on the fly when it runs on Asian systems or English system with Asian default language settings. However, some dialog boxes are designed in pixel precision and they don't resize under any circumstances. Most floating palettes are designed in pixel precision. You may see some dialog items being clipped in such dialog boxes.
