Font transfer: Illustrator to PDF
Using Illustrator 8.0 under Win98SE and Windows-resident TrueType fonts. The Illustrator .ai file looks great and when Saved As a .PDF, looks good when viewed in Illustrator. But when the PDF is opened with Reader 6.0, one of the fonts (Windows "Symbol" TT font) is missing. Ideas?

Re: Font transfer: Illustrator to PDF
Jim,
Are you sure you have embedded all fonts?

Re: Font transfer: Illustrator to PDF
Thanks, Jacob; yes, I clicked the button to embed all fonts, but "Symbols" just doesn't come through. Funny thing, though, when I create a PDF of the Illustrator page using the freeware utility 'Cute PDF Writer,' everything works fine. I used to have Adobe Acrobat Writer on my computer, but when I downloaded the latest version of Acrobat Reader, the installation wiped out all the earlier Adobe utilities (old Acrobat Reader, plus Acrobat Writer and Acrobat Distiller). By the way, I am a brand-new user of Illustrator, having used Microsoft Publisher for similar needs heretofore.

Re: Font transfer: Illustrator to PDF
Jim, it may be an Acrobat issue.
Is it possible to include "Symbols" in a new job setting (Acrobat Distiller>Printer>Printing preferences>Adobe PDF settings), defining a new Conversion setting, either by adding "Symbols" to Always embed or by choosing the font set it belongs to under Embedding?
Another question: do the commas show in Acrobat Reader, without the letters?

Re: Font transfer: Illustrator to PDF
Jacob, thanks for the info and ideas. I'm relatively new to Acrobat matters and am still learning things about Illustrator, which I only installed a couple of days ago. As I said earlier, Distiller was purged from the system when I installed Acrobat Reader 6, and I have no idea where the disc is, of course. CutePDF writer seems to do the job just fine, though, so I will probably stumble along using it until, for some reason, it makes sense to reinstall Acrobat Writer. I'll re-post if I have other problems, but certainly do appreciate this newsgroup. I have learned a lot by looking at other people's posts.

Re: Font transfer: Illustrator to PDF
Jim,
The decisive difference between Distiller and Writer is that Distiller uses the fonts you decide, and Writer uses the fonts the machine decides. So I think you should start looking.
