Font won't show up in the list

Default Font won't show up in the list

I don't know what to do. I made sure the font was activated in ATM and the font shows up in all the other programs (PageMaker, MS Word, etc.) except in Illustrator. I tried reinstalling the font. I tried moving the font to the system/fonts folder and nothing works. The weird thing is that in ATM, this specific font shows at the very end of the list. ATM shows all the known fonts by alphabetical order and then there is a horizontal line ——like some kind of divider—— the font is under that line and is the only one after the line/divider

Does anybody have a suggestion? Why does the font shows under that line in ATM?

I think mine might be the opposite, but I can't check it out. I know in AI10.03 I have a couple of fonts like that at the bottom, but they still work. I can't remember seeing that in ATM though. What version AI do you have and what version for AI? You must be in system 9.2.2 or earlier since I've heard ATM doesn't work in OSX.

What's the font name by the way. I'm a font addict.

    Patty,

I'm also assuming you're on Mac OS 9.2.2 or earlier.

There are at least two types of fonts that will show under horizontal dividers. One group is made up of foreign language support fonts, such as Charcoal CY (CY stands for Cyrillc), Geneva CY, Helvetica CY, Monaco CY and Times CY, as well as the so-called E-R web fonts (English-Russian), etc.

Then there are specialized fonts needed by things such as terminal programs, like the VT100 - VT102 fonts. These show under a second horizontal line under the above group of language support fonts.

Neither of those two groups show in AI 8.01 under 9.2.2.

The first group shows up in Key Caps, but the second one doesn't. I believe this is because you really can't access their characters through the keyboard, but are only needed and called up automatically when the appropriately coded document, like a web page, or the terminal application, demands it.

Which specific font are you wondering about?

I have that font VT100, it shows up like that in AI10.03, but it is named in ATM. I can't remember the name right now. I'ts a script that starts with V. Vel...Val...I can't remeber right now.
I also have Times Cyrillc in that group. I'm not sure what you mean by Key Caps but they are at the bottom of the scroll list in AI10.
I can use any of those fonts to type regular letters.

I had your problem with AI9 & AI10 with certain fonts not showing up. Sometimes you can scroll down to Serif or Sans Serif and find it there. (If you know what the font looks like)

I haven't had any luck with the font Brittanica by the way.

Hope this helps some, good luck.

    Dee,

It looks like you got my post mixed up with Patty's and made one issue combining the two. I don't have a problem, Patty does.

All my fonts behave like I expect them to.

I was merely trying to relate to her what the horizontal dividers mean in my case.

So even if though I'm not asking a question at all, thanks for your effort. :)

I'm not sure what you mean by Key Caps

Key Caps is the Apple utility (used to be a Desk Accessory) in the Apple menu.

    Ramon,

I was commenting to Patty and asking you about the Key Caps.
Thank you for your post. I always wondered why those fonts were separated.

~ATM does work in Classic, though.

Unless you have font management software, there's a limit to the number of
fonts your computer can display in system 9.

    I am using OS 9.2 and AI9

The font family that doesn't show is P22 Victorian, so I think that doesn't have anything to do with being in a different language. I went through all the list in AI and the font is not there at all.

If the font has the usual letters, why would it show under the divider in ATM?

    Thanks for your help =)

You may not want to use P22 fonts because they are often (perhaps always?) non-embeddable.

That means that the fonts will not display, or print, properly from a PDF unless the recipient has the font on their computer.

I just want this font to work in my computer. I will never need to use the file in another computer. I can't understand why the font works in all the other programs but Illustrator.

    Hi Patty,

Is this font TrueType, Type 1 or OpenType?

It's possible that there is something wrong with one of your adobefnt.lst files. These are files used by Adobe applications to store information about the fonts on your system.

As a test and possible fix, trying quitting out of Illustrator, doing a find for adobefnt.lst files and deleting any that you find.

When you restart Illustrator it will rebuild these font list files.

    Hope this helps,

If it's a Type 1 (which it probably is), do you have both the screen font and the outline font on your machine?
And do they "recognize" each other? (You can fix that problem with Fontographer if you have it).

You might just want to download a new copy (about $24) from:
