fonts acting up
Hi,
I looked in the FAQ, the knowledge base and previous posts but couldn't find an answer for this...
I'm trying to open a PDF in CS (on W2K). The PDF has text (all in Arial) and a couple of graphs. When I open it I get the error:
"The font Arial is missing. Affected text will be displayed using a substitute font."
(Needless to say, I do have Arial installed.)
When the document opens, the graphs are still there, but there is no type at all. If I select the textboxes and set them to a different font, I get question marks instead of the text.
Furthermore, the "Arial" pull-down in the font list has bold, italic, and bold italic, but not regular.
Here is what I tried to do:
- delete the preferences file
- delete all the adobefnts.lst files
- copy the Arial font file into c:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts.
I've also noticed that in the font drop-down menu, the fonts don't actually display in their own typeface, but often in a different typeface.
I have several hundreds of fonts installed, is it a known issue that CS doesn't handle long font lists well? Is there a patch / product update? (I couldn't find one in the downloads section)
Thanks in advance...
Cheers
Axel

Re: fonts acting up
You've tried all the usual cures Axle, so I guess that's why no one has answered you yet. I can't think of anything other than the usual problems with having so many fonts installed. Why don't you try making a few font sets and installing just a small set with Arial in it... couldn't hurt.

Axel,
typeface<<>>in the font drop-down menu, the fonts don't actually display in their own
They're not designed to. That only happens in the Menu item Type>Font

Re: fonts acting up
Axel,
What is PDF's text content? I mean is it cyrillic or another non-latin text? If so, there may be a problem with codepage settings.

Re: fonts acting up
Axel,
Maybe you should try another forum too, such as Acrobat.
Was Arial embedded in the PDF?

Re: fonts acting up
Hi,
thanks for the feedback. I tried removing most of the fonts and keeping only a small number, but I still get the same error.
Jacob, I don't know if the font is embedded. Is there a way to check that?
Boyan, the text is latin.
Kind regards
Axel

Re: fonts acting up
Axel,
I thought you or whoever made the PDF could tell.

Re: fonts acting up
Another suggestion. You mentioned that you copied the font into "c:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts.Programs/ Adobe / Fonts"....
You might want to try putting it in C/Windows/Fonts and make sure your program is not open when you do this.
