fonts become bold when making PDF from finale files
Please pardon the long post.
Acrobat, against my wishes, makes some fonts super-bold after i collect them together in a big file (120pp) and edit it.
I am making a music book. Made the files in Finale, saved them as PDFs using the system 'save as PDF' feature, collected these together in Acrobat. At first they would usually be fine. Then as soon as i tried to number pages or do some other edit, cetain fonts would become super-bold, so bold the letters ran into each other.
The fonts that become bold are not the standard engraver or maestro fonts that come with finale. They are:
Gill sans light (bold) -- used for time signature
Parade (plain) -- for chord suffixes
Apple chancery (bold) -- for chord suffixes
Now i notice that there is no one thing that seems to touch this off. Sometimes it happens when i edit the big PDF, like adding page numbers, sometimes when i include a file. Once it might happen on some pages and not others, the next time on a different collection of pages. It truly seems to be random, which pages are affected.
Undoing the page numbering does not undo the bold. I have to close the file without saving, re-open it to undo the bold fonts.
Also, bizarrely: this can sometimes also affect the original individual PDF files. This makes me think that possibly it's something with my system, not acrobat. But what?
I thought i had a solution, opening the PDFs in Preview and saving them again as a PDF. That seemed to work once or twice, then it stopped working. Also, i had two fonts from the web, Libel Suit and SF New Republic (or Old). These seemed to create other problems, so i replaced them with more standard fonts, but maybe they left some kind of corruption? (the replacements fonts are Futura condensed and Skia.)
I have deleted the printers and reset the print system several times.
I have repaired permissions and checked the disk.
I have done detect and repair several times.
I have deleted adobe prefs.
I have 3-4 gigs free on my 60-gig HD.
I updated the OS to 10.4.7, but this was happening before then. I recently downloaded the combination update and re-updated.
After that i reinstalled the cupsd.conf update too.
It's still happening, i have spent many hours agonising over this and trolling around and STFWing and i cannot figure this out.
Please help.
I am using a mac powerbook g4 PPC 1ghz, 10.4.7. Acrobat prof 7.0.8, Finale 2004c.

saved them as PDFs using the system 'save as PDF' feature
Possibly the first mistake.
Instead of doing that, try printing to the Adobe PDF printer. Make sure all fonts are embedded, then try again.
Also, why are you trying to edit in Acrobat if you have the original file? That's not really the purpose that Acrobat is intended for.

Re: fonts become bold when making PDF from finale files
yeah, true.
I can't print to the adobe printer, is why. Doesn't work at all. There are other threads here in this forum that seem to be exactly my same problem, and i read them all and did what they suggested, but it still won't work. After many hours of trying, i gave up.
I am not sure that all the fonts embed. I can always see them in the resulting big final big file... ? ..
I only edit in acrobat to add page numbers, or delete/add a page. I could conceivably add page numbers to each indiv. file, but if one page changes, i'm screwed.
I must collect all the single pages into one big file for the printer company.
thanks for the comments.

Just to be certain, have you tried running Help>Detect and Repair from within Acrobat.
Also, have you tried removing the PDF printer in Print Center then reinstalling?

Re: fonts become bold when making PDF from finale files
I've found that embedding doesn't necessarily work I have set in distiller to embedd all fonts and it shows that all fonts do show up in embed list except those that are not permitted.
Yet when I use optimizer and decided to remove any embeded fonts to make document smaller it always say something about subset.
The last version that actually showed for me that fonts were truely embeded was e5.05 . After that point only susets are embeded.
This could be a problem as well for your situation.

Re: fonts become bold when making PDF from finale files
harmonk,
OK, you are using Finale 2004. Have you tried Finale 2005 or 2006? Can you post the sample PDF files so that we can look at them and perhaps make some suggestions? Can you post the Finale files (I actually have the application *grin*) and I'll see if I have any suggestions that you can use from a Finale perspective. Have you seen this KB from MakeMusic?
