Default Fonts changing when pasting into new document

I've noticed this peculiar bug at least a couple times. I'll cut some elements out of one InDesign document, paste them into a new black document, and several of the fonts change. Has anyone else seen this, and does anyone have any idea what might cause it?

This most likely has to do with different definitions of default paragraph and/or character style for the two documents. If so, Dave Saunders has done excellent descriptions of both the problem and a possible solution in this thread:

I think the thread cited by Eric deserves to be rescued before it goes to the limbus. Hope it's not too late.

It is a known problem. See this TechNote:

That topic was already protected against expiring. When I see references made to topics I tend to do that. I just elevated it to visible permanent status.

I'm going add the information in Nini's message 3 to it.

    Thanks Claudio and Nini.

Nini, thanks for the link. However, I find Dave's explanation in the thread more informative and complete. In my opinion, it's one of those threads that deserve been rescued.

Thanks for pointing me to those links, but none look like a fix, just a workaround. And they don't work in my situation. I am on the latest version of ID 4.04. If I clear the override on the text in question, it disappears completely. And now that I look at the document, there is text messed up all over the place. I regular use this process in my daily workflow designing magazines. Picking up elements that have been used before from older issues. Does this mean, I have to double check every font. It is happening from the Library too. If I pull something out of the library, the font is changing too! And now that I delve deaper, I had some problems with fonts I though I changed, having reverted back. This must have been what happened here too! This is the kind of shit I abandoned Quark because of!

You had a genuine question in your opening post, and it has been answered. I am not sure if you are asking anything in your last message, or just venting. Please remember you are addressing fellow users here, not Adobe.

Venting a bit, but I'm just saying as far as my workflow, this is a very serious bug. The workaround didn't work in my case either.

I'm guessing that Russell Viers' explanation of what can happen (in the link Chris provided in #9) is what's going on. He did a great job of illustrating it visually.

    I make magazines too.

What I do when I set up a new template or magazine is:

with a blank Paragraph style sheet pallet I drag a block of text with all styles I want to use from an old mag. I don't copy and paste the text.

This retains all the styles and fonts, for me anyway.

    Exactly, Peter.

It just saves problems of bringing styles over with the same name. I believe that the style in the doc you are moving the text too will override the style being brought in.

drag&drop and copy/paste between InDesign documents?

drag and drop is the same as copy and paste of the whole text frame. see Post #16

but copy and paste of just type depends how your prefs are set.
