Barb, you were asking me about a way to manage large libraries in iphoto. You might want to look at this <http://www.osxfaq.com/dailytips/06-2003/06-27.ws>. iPhoto Buddy lets you split libraries in iphoto 2.

Barbara, hi! Thanks for thinking of me...yep, I'm still running 10.1.5.

Finally got around to burning all of my photos to DVD's...so, I'm going to unload the library one of these days. I have to admit, I really like having the easy access to all my photos and have been reluctant to remove any so far. It takes forever for the iPhoto Library to open up!

Is there a fast way to trash the entire library contents? I don't have the patience for 5000+ images to be dumped one by one from the trash. Time for a little housekeeping...

Hi, Barb. Yes, I think it's in your user/pictures/iphoto library. (Still on 10.1.5 here, also. I'll probably wait for Panther now.)

Thanks, Barbara. So, I can just trash the entire iPhoto Library Folder and that should take care of it...great!

They'll probably release an entire line of cats before I'll upgrade...I'm used to the old 10.1.5 and rather like it.

Hi, Carl. Don't forget that you have iPhoto 2 and I think Barb still has iphoto 1, don't you, Barb?

Barb, I wouldn't necessarily trash the whole library folder, just open it and you'll see what to dump. There are subfolders inside it.

Hi, Carl. Thanks for the info on managing large iPhoto files...I'll definitely check that one out. I hope you're enjoying your Mac!

I have considered an external hard drive and would probably be a smart thing for me to look into. I'm lucky to have a DVD burner, so I've been able to back-up my photos with some ease, although it is rather slow. I also have to burn separate folders from the library by dragging and dropping them onto the DVD disc, as there is no way the entire library would ever fit on one DVD.

Barbara, I do have iPhoto 2 and cannot burn directly from it with 10.1.5. I have to go to Users>My Home>Pictures>iPhoto Library in order to do any burning. Apple told me about that, when much to my surprise, I clicked on 'Burn' in iPhoto 2 and it read "You must have 10.2 in order to Burn from iPhoto 2" or something to that effect. Thank goodness there was a way around that.

I'll keep you posted on how the iPhoto file management goes...I'm learning as I go along. My problem is, each day I keep loading in more and more images.

That's weird Barb - I've burnt from iphoto2 on 10.1.5 - I've got a back up iphoto library (from the days it woould still fit on one CD!) to prove it! (and i just tried again) - maybe it didn't like your superdrive? (I've just got a CD burner)

I'm still trying to organise my shots properly - the new camera has added over a Gig of images in three weeeks - and I've trashed about 75 per cent of the ones that I've taken!
I keep all my original camera images in folders and then just import the family album type shots into iphoto - the ones that I'm likely to want to run slideshows of (it's easy enough for the kids to run their own slideshows without my intervention) label and print out album pages etc.
Otherwise the library gets too unwieldy!

Barb - I most certainly am enjoying it! The only downside is that there seems to be a lot less pleasurable fiddling around in Elements to be done when you are starting with a properly framed and exposed shot! (and my poor children are starting to run in the opposite direction when I pull the camera out...they've got a little bit sick of being my guinea-pigs for testing all the settings....it being winter there aren't too many flowers, and i've already got plenty of shots of the cat...)

Barb - I have (taken lots of photos of the kids that is)!! With the arrival of the new 5MP Canon G5, and the stronger $Aussie the price of the G3 had fallen from around $A1600 to $A1250 in a bit over a month...and I couldn't resist it (I went into the shop to buy an A70.....). I could still weep when I see the prices you can get it for in the US though - but I wasn't willing to buy one without an Australian warranty. As far as I can see the G3 does about everything that I could want in a camera for everyday use, given a digital SLR is not in the price range. Except you can't do manual focus by twiddling a ring on the lens! I don't like the auto focus in these compacts !! The SLR systems seem better (I was playing with a Canon 35mm SLR yesterday....)- although I'm doing much better with the G3 focus since I learnt that I really do need to use my reading glasses to see what is going on on the LCD screen!

Yes the cord around my neck is an option I am seriously considering! Not a good look really in the fashion stakes, but then neither is peering over a pair of half-frame "granny glasses" , which I do all the time - if i'm drawing I wear them perched half way down my nose so I can see both the subject and the paper.

FWIW...upon further investigating, a CD can be burned directly from iPhoto 2 running Mac OS 10.1.5. I've got one burning as I write. For some reason the DVD cannot...but it's no big deal.

    Barb,

Another reference for multiple libraries is http:iphoto.tidbits.com/ (I know Barbara has instructed me on the other way to reference but I have not caught on yet) the first article discusses two other programs I believe.

Carl, I really appreciate your sending me there. At that address I found the i Photo Library Manager <http://homepage.mac.com/bwebster/iphotolibrarymanager.html>. This looks great and it'll run in OS 10.1.2 and up, for either iPhoto version 1 or 2. It definitely ought to help with some of my organization problems. Thanks again!

    Barb,

    iPhoto Diet

< href=http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~fuhrer/personal/freestuff/>Here is another reference and tool for those of us with large libraries in iPhoto. I have not started using it yet, but I will shortly. I believe it will eliminate duplicates and other redundent images under conditions we can set. Soon as I can get some experience I will report.

Did it work about the short form? I tried to do it like Barbara taught me.

    Carl

Oh well. I can see already it did not. I will have to try again. Don't know what I did wrong. BTW, the program is called iPhoto Diet.

You forgot the "a" in the "a href" part.

Thanks, Carl. I'd love to put my iPhoto library on a diet, but I'm still running 10.1.5. Looks great for you though! I downloaded the iPhoto Library Manager which I mentioned in a previous message here...but haven't had time to try it out yet.

It's fantastic you're trying the HTML! :-) HTML is very non-forgiving...it took me quite a while to get the hang of it. Practicing at The HTML Laboratory <http://www.cwru.edu/cgi-bin/tutorial/laboratory> or even here on the forum is great fun. The magic of HTML is amazing...!

Hi, Carl. I'm glad it wasn't worse than that. Yes, .mac offers web page templates very like the powerbase ones that a lot of people here are using. Just go to the .mac site and it will walk you through. (I don't have .mac, but that's how it was with itools and I believe it hasn't changed, except that you get much more space now. You just select the template you want and it will tell you what to do.) EDIT I think you can also start from the "export" tab of iphoto, as well.

I haven't used iphoto diet. For one thing, like Barb Wayne I'm still on 10.1.5, and for another, I don't have a digital camera so only photos that I scan get into my computer. So I only have one small album in inphoto and don't have the management issues that you lucky digicammers have.

Carl, Here's <http://homepage.mac.com/ryantheimacman/HTML%20Link.jpg> another excellent link with instructions for writing HTML, not sure if Barbara gave you this link before. This one REALLY helped me.

There is one more thing you missed on the link you tried...should put after your link word 'Here' to close out the HTML. I'd write out exactly how it should look, but it'll turn into a link under the word. Try it out at the HTML Laboratory.

    Barbara, hi!

    :-)

EDIT: I tried to write what was missing after the word 'Here' and it did not show up there...because it IS HTML....SO, look at the example on the link I posted above and always close off the word you chose for the link the way it appears there. Sorry for the confusion...

Hi, Barb. To make that stuff visible here, use option + shift + 3 or option + shift +4 to make the brackets. So...

Carl, Barb meant you forgot to put ‹/a› at the end of the visible part of your link. What you typed would have made the rest of your response into one big link.
