I was trying to play some media and kept getting the following error
message

"the application requires an Xtra (Quick time 3) that either dose not
exist or failed to initialize properly. Please make sure the
appropriate Xtras are in the Xtras folder(s)"

After looking at the post on this board the problem seems to be that an
Xtra file was not packaged into the software's CD and possibly the
developer did not check the "Download if Needed" button when
developing the software. What dose this mean? The end user, me, did not
receive the files necessary to play the media.

So if the developer did not provide you with the files and the program
dose not know to "Download the files when Needed". Then you must go out
and get those darn Xtra files. Once you have them, you must put them
in the correct place.

The following steps were used for my specific situation, but if you are
missing an Xtra file which is keeping you from playing media some
derivation of this could work for you....

1.download shockwave V10 from the following
[url]http://sdc.shockwave.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?[/url]

2. Locate and download the Xtra file called QT3Assets.X32 I found it in
public space located on
[url]http://college.hmco.com/chemistry/shared/install_xtra.html[/url]

QT3Assets.X32 is a Macromedia Director software file so you are able to
get a slightly different but functional copy by downloading a trial
version of Director located at
[url]http://macromedia.com/software/director/?promoid=home_prod_dir_082403[/url]

and then finding the file QT6Assets under

C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Director MX 2004\Configuration\Xtras\Media
Element\QT

3. Finally copy and paste either QT3Assets or QT6Assets into the
following file C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Shockwave 10\Xtras
Or if your system is not structured like this then look for an Xtra
folder under shockwave and copy and paste the file there.

Anyway after doing those 3 steps the media (James Jiambalvo Video
Introduction) is working and the error message
is gone.
