    Default FOREGROUND / BACKGROUND toolbar

I am using photshop6 and I had to reinstall the program after a system disaster

The problem that I have is that the toolbar shows both the foreground / background as grey and I cannot change it. Through the F / B boxes are dashed lines. The foreground / background in the show colour are correct and I can use the program from this box by using the colours shown there. I have reset the preferences but this has had no effect.

I have tried a reinstall several times but the problem has not gone away.

As a trial I installed photoshop7 and the foreground / background in the toolbar show up correctly with the exception there are dashes in the respective boxes.

I am at a loss to know if the problem is with windows xp or in the software for photoshop6

Any thoughts or just plain good old fashion educated guesses would be appreciated

    Thanks in Advance

Educated guess - re-run Adobe Gamma from the control panel and create a new monitor profile.

I have tried your suggestion and I am not sure I am doing it correctly.

To give more detail to the problem. When I first open photoshop6 the tool bar foreground / background is black / white as it should be.

When I open any sample picture the tool bar bkg / fgd goes to grey for both. Yet the show color shows the the correct colors picked even though the tool bar shows grey for both.

The pictures are being converted to the working space color.. somewhere there must be a setting I have wrong or perhaps a corrupted file

    All suggestions appreciated

    Thanks

Check in IMAGE>MODE and see what is checked. It sounds like Grayscale may be selected instead of RGB.

My foreground and background go to grey when I try to use the brushes on my picture. I have checked to make sure my image mode is not on gray scale and it is not but I have the same result. I need help please, thank you.
